Tottenham are set to receive a massive blow as latest reports claim Newcastle have become to favourites to beat them to the signing of Leicester City star James Maddison.
Following the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, reports claimed that the Australian has given the club the green light to sign the attacking midfielder from the Foxes.
90min also reported that Tottenham have opened talks with Leicester City to sign the star player in the summer. The report claimed that the negotiations between the two clubs have begun and that the recently relegated side are looking for a fee in the region of £55m.
However, according to the latest report from Sky Sports, Newcastle have taken a surprise lead in the race to sign the highly rated midfielder as Eddie Howe looks to further bolster his squad after their qualification to the Champions League.
Newcastle have been interested in him since last summer and even made two bids for him, with Leicester rejecting both bids as it fell short of their £60m valuation. It was reported that Newcastle’s last bid was in the region of £50m.
They certainly have the financial resources to sign him and will also be able to offer him Champions League football, something Spurs will not be able to do so.
Maddison has established himself as one of the league’s finest midfielders, consistently delivering top-level performances for several years. He has scored 55 goals and 41 assists in 203 appearances for the club in all competitions.
Despite Leicester City’s underwhelming season, the attacking midfielder stood out again, contributing with 19 goals and assists in the league.
