Sessegnon & Foyth Would Handicap Any Spurs Back 4

Kieran Trippier’s departure is a masterpiece from the lad’s agent(s) at Stellar.

Getting this one over the line to a side that was specifically looking to rebuild its backline this summer, deserves splosh or two of Pol Roger this Friday evening after work.

I am no mocking fool (like all those immortalised Twitter cretins) and so will continue to maintain that Tripps was merely guilty of not being a wing back at Spurs.

One plays a man out of the position he has known all his career and one will get a fair amount of debris to clear up afterwards. Thems the rules.

The burning question now however, is what are the club’s plans for our backline?

Please don’t tell me that Ryan Sessegnon is ready for the big time. Or that Juan Foyth has been at the body builder drinks all summer.

Neither are the required standard. Cameron Carter-Vickers remains nothing more than a punt.

Bed Davies is a decent guy. But he’s not a wing back either. With Danny Rose being publicly scythed, suddenly the joy of Tanguy NDombele is less reassuring.

Tottenham are looking like they could heading back into Martin Jol territory, where some of us used to enjoy tickling the bookies’ tummies on high scoring games.

There’s something odd about what appears to be happening at Spuds. Given Tino’s recent protestations regarding the future of this club, and the fact that the players we appear to preparing to sell are the better of the two squad players in their respective positions, why would I not presume that some more big purchases are being set up? I mean what’s the alternative version of what’s to come? A general downgrade of the squad aside from Tonjee?

Something must be up someone’s sleeve. Please god it doesn’t turn out to be a monumental expectation management campaign.

Yes Squidgygait. This is a good point. Homegrown has a minimal requirement. I neef not remind you that Davies is Welsh and Dier is from Portuguesem. So losing Trippier causes a balancing act. We can’t afford to lose Rose without another homegrown. Enter Ryan. The love affair. Distraction maybe time will tell. Personally I think Danny Rose is about to really step up. I hope he can stay.

Tripps had a poor season as did half the World Cup squad. A fresh Tripps laid on countless chances with great delivery the season before. A fit Rose is top 3 left backs in the PL. Toby still a top 3 CH. Serge Aurier is an accident waiting to happen. Foyth is raw. Davinson switches off and doesn’t distribute well. As for Dier… I’m speechless at our business. It makes no sense.

Whoever replaces Toby and Rose will not be as good as them. To get better players means spending big ,and we won’t because we all know how we do our transfer business. Ndombele got us excited, now we are going back to the same old spurs . Sell before we buy , and hope for the best.

I get selling Danny rose, his had his injuries and has tried to engineer a move when it suited him. He has done a great service but it’s time to freshen the left back position. Was surprised by today news given it was that cheap! If we had got 28+m I’d have felt a bit better. Trippier has been injured and knackered all year, a decent summer break and think we’d have got the old trippier of the season before back!

If Spurs now sell TA and DR as well without any significant moves on more incoming then we are considerably weaker now than we were at this stage last season.

To put things in context …Ndombele looks a great add but he is filling the void left by Dembélé. Jack Clarke isn’t here but at Leeds so the 2 current signings have not moved us on from July 2018.

Now Tripps has gone, DR will soon follow and if we believe the rumour so too TA. If those 3 aren’t replaced with better quality then we are worse off not better off. None of the current players mentioned (KWP, JF, BD) as backfill are same level…they’re merely that …backfill options

And none of the defensive transfer rumours mentioned are short term replacements …they’re potentially good players for the future but DR and TA are great players now!

Euphoria of finally signing someone of quality again is over….current behaviour, and rumours is worrying. At best we start the season with a similar strength squad but right now it looks weaker

Danny Rose at his best, like what we started to see again at the back end of last season is a great experienced PL LB. Replacing him with Sessingnon is a huge gamble given his showing for Fulham last season. I think the boy has potential, however at this stage it is just that.
Losing two homegrown players given our lack of them is going to be expensive to replace given the premium price they command. All the decent ones already play PL football and mainly for top 10 clubs. None who would be happy to sell to us. I’m slightly concerned Levy will look to more championship ‘potential’ to save costs. Or are we looking at the academy to fill the quota. If so its gonna be a long hard watch next season…. Let’s hope Poch has Levy in a position where he has no choice but to back him and get the players he actually wants. I doubt that’s the case personally.

I agree, it’s madness selling Toby and Danny. Like throwing out vintage wine and replacing it with cheap Spanish plonk. I think Poch is getting too caught up in this age thing, just because a player is young doesn’t mean he’s going to ever be good enough. Sessegnon had a go at the PL and failed, Foyth is nowhere near ready, if he’ll ever be.
Toby is a world class CB and Danny would run for us all day if he had to, either replace them with quality, or don’t lose them and pay them what they’re worth. There’s a novel idea Mr Bungler, pay them some of your salary as you do fuck all to deserve it.

Finn

Poch has had a pretty consistent plan for his defence from Day 1: wing backs who are fast and very fit and can deliver decent crosses, centre backs who can cover the flanks if the full backs are exposed and a defensive midfielder who can break down attacks that get past the midfield or drop between the centre backs if they are pulled wide covering.

His other defensive plan is for everyone to defend from the front; our attackers being our first line of defence.

Given the plan, it’s then about getting the personnel to fit the structure and losing 20 games last term shows that Poch did not have the right players to do that.

The key differences from 3 years ago were no effective wing backs (other than an inconsistent Rose), no attacking front player (Llamella used to do this really well but sadly his back legs are the wrong side of dodgy) and no player to pick up, hold and distribute, Dembele was great but for the last 18 months was at best partial.

My view is that Tanguy will fill Dembele’s shoes, Foyth will cover Trippier and Lo Celso alongside or in place of Eriksen will add more bite and creativity; he’ll also press other players (Dele) for their places. Hopefully Foyth will have the vim to perform the wing back role on the right –

I don’t think we’ll lose Alder/tongen. Given Foyth goes to wing back and that we are not being linked to any central defenders, (and I think we would be if we were losing not 1 but 2 centre backs), I think Toby will stay.

This leaves spots for a back-up striker and a left full back (if Rose goes); I’m not so sure about “bloody revenge”, I tend more towards it just being his time. For the role Poch wants, his legs probably don’t have much more than another season in them, maybe less under the stress of Poch’s vision of the role: his training regime is reputed to be pretty brutal and especially for the wing backs; maybe too brutal for 28 year olds and over.

I think another aspect of Poch’s plan is youth and Rose is a bit of a loose cannon. With new young players coming in/through, I think the idea of Rose’s random gobbing may not be seen as the foundations of a good team building exercise – and the team ethic is a very strong pillar of Poch’s philosophy.

I think that a final career move for both Trippier and Rose into more traditional full back roles will suit them both better than struggling to cope as wing back’s.

I largely agree that Sessegnon will need some time and I’m not convinced he has the defensive capabilities, though he could help keep Dele on his toes in a more forward role. I think lo Celso and Sessegnon will come, but we will also need a back-up striker and I think a good left wing back.

Sessegnon will not currently improve Spurs at left back. In fact, in the short term, it is a retrograde step. As for Foyth, it is not too long ago, in the EPL, that Foyth was a walking penalty/red card waiting to happen. Clearly his performances at the back end of last season and his Copa America matches for Argentina, both at RB, are a positive sign of recent improvement in that position, but even so I remain to be convinced that he is a natural RB, let alone a Bonzo, in-his-prime, class RWB. The end result therefore, in my opinion, would be an immediate downgrade at both FB positions for next season. Certainly from two years ago.

Now if you add in a possible departure for Toby, without a top notch replacement CB, then a third position will have been downgraded, in a defence which has been going backwards for two straight seasons. Even stellar additions in midfield like Ndombele and perhaps Lo Celso and a promising youngster or two, as welcome as they might be, will not mask our increasing defensive frailties. Davies and Trippier are/were decent quality back-ups/ good squad players. Davinson and Foyth might even become genuine starters at CB, but right now they are behind Jan and Toby. Thus, if Toby goes, we will have lost 3/4 of our starting back four that conceded the least goals in the EPL for two consecutive seasons.

The credible solution to that problem is what??? Answers on a post card to ‘The Boy Hotspur.com’ please, courtesy of Messrs Poch and Levy!

We might see Dier return to center back eventually because Jan and Toby aren’t going to be around forever. These few seasons playing in midfield will have provided Dier with greater composure on the ball. Personally I feel this might be Poch’s long term strategy with Dier to develop him into a quality ball playing ‘Toby Mk2’…
