Southampton claimed a stunning 3-2 Boxing Day victory on the road against West Ham, helping them move clear of the Premier League (PL) relegation picture. Here, the ‘Saints’ will be further boosted by a return to St Mary’s Stadium where they’ve lost just once in this PL season (W2, D5) and are currently unbeaten in five straight PL matches (W2, D3) – their longest such run since between March and October 2016!
What will be of concern though for the hosts is their poor previous H2H record against Tottenham, a side they’ve lost to more than any other outfit since their PL return in 2012 (L13). That includes a sizable 5-2 loss in this fixture last campaign, a result that ended Southampton’s four-game unbeaten run in home H2Hs (W2, D2). Spurs boss Antonio Conte is enjoying his start to life in North London, remaining unbeaten across his first six PL outings in charge of the visitors (W4, D2). In fact, if he manages to avoid defeat again here, the Italian will become the first manager in club history to start his tenure by going seven league matches unbeaten. Their first PL away match in 51 days does come with its challenges, though. That’s mainly because Spurs’ league form on the road this season has been poor (W2, D1, L3) and they could potentially go three PL away matches without scoring for the first time since March 2014.
Players to watch: Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse netted his fourth goal of the season last time out, his last 12 club goals have now all come directly from set-pieces
Harry Kane has notched 18 goal contributions (G10, A8) in 16 previous H2Hs, including a remarkable five in this fixture last campaign (G1, A4).
Hot streak: Southampton hasn’t won their final league fixture of a calendar year for the past ten seasons (D5, L5).
A bad performance is never acceptable, but I live in reality. So while we should have won VAR silly calls and all. This is not like we were on a bad run and cannot get our act together by getting a golden opportunity playing against 10. It is literally even if you want to throw Dele in the mix, but to believe the elites do not stumble is a fallacy. It hurts as a long time fan to see another silly one liner like yours during this little ray of hope. Leave that to our foes down the road.
So you think yesterday’s performance was a good one ? It wasn’t. We were second to pretty much everything. Even with 10 men they were still better than us.
I’ll say it again. If we want to dine at the top table we have to beat the likes of S’hampton. Especially a 10 man S’hampton.
over nd out
Play nice
Why you think anyone who lives in reality is some Newbie. I have been a Spurs fan for more than 40 years, and I do not care how long you are sitting on your stool waiting to take a pop at the team.
Bore off, Leonard. I’m sure you are Glenn Hoddle in your own mind, but your comments suggest you are as clueless as Levy.
Dier “the best defender in the world” nearly cost us that draw. Fact. He also cost us a goal versus Liverpool when he passed straight to them and then got in a muddle. That’s all happened during his “best” bit of form for us.
We need to upgrade. Never going to happen but a De Ligt in his position would be night and days difference.
Nice set of logical fallacies there. Also, wasn’t it Dele who failed to charge down JWP?
Where you going to find those quality backs. Name those that are available we can go snatched up January and what price tag you looking at and the outgoing to make it happen. Those general statements do sound really nice. Why get a Dusan in January while we are harvesting players.
Oh my days …. not been a Spurs fan for long I take it.
We’ve just failed to beat a 10 man S’hampton. That was a typical
Spursy performance. These are the games we have to win if we want to dine at the top table.
if you’re happy with that performance then you’re part of the problem.
Bro, I did not say he does not have a mistake in him. Dier was far from what cost us 2 points. I just feel like you guys beat the obvious to death. He had a decent game over 90. He was certain not the problem. We cannot find a half decent creative mid for times like these. Conte erred should have never started Alli and why Gil on the right. He clearly is limited over there. Conte had serial chances to switch them as Doherty was wide open on many occasions. Why not give the natural lefty a shot at it.But we should do better against 10 men with our 10 for almost 60 minutes. Dele was no where to be found.. VAR is just plain wrong on the Doherty it is not like he charge into Fraser. The ball went through his basket because he lost the flight. That ball with his frame should be gather above his head.
Not into it with you. Just Wow. It could be 10 in a row and one slip up gets brain numbing comments like yours.
No ! Spursy
Wow.
They had Ward Prowse
Sonny was terrible today. And not the only one.
Dier makes too many mistakes. Look at the best centre halves and see how many mistakes they make, Van Dyke for instance.
A poor result but a necessary corrective to any ideas Levy had that he possessed a top squad that only needed the right manager to return to the Champions League and the top four Daniel craves.
Like Dickens Scrooge Levy has been given another chance at redemption. Will he spend real money to back Conte or will he return to counting his pennies?
The upcoming January transfer window will see the chairman weighed in the balance, let’s hope he is not found wanting.
What worries me is that Arse beat this lot easily 3-0 without any sending’s off to help them. At the moment they’re looking more likely for that 4th spot on current form. Our squad is bloated with too many bang average players, some of whom only seem capable of raising their game against big opponents.
Are asking whether I’m a bastard or frigid?
Get someone in early in the window so they’re up to speed in time for the Chelsea matches…or do a Levy and wait til we’re out of the cup and buy an unproven waste of time and money.
Yeah. Another sitting on couch waiting for something to complain about. Funny you not complaining about Son not marking Prowse on the edge 9f his own box, but if it was another player you would have posted your gripe the tape to prove it.
Spursy ….
They moved the ball so much better all over the pitch.
I presume Conte had little choice to start certain players due to a lack of recovery time after Palace. It’s up to those players to come in and do a job, but they didn’t, so at least it exposes the weakness of the squad, let’s see what January window brings.
We can’t beat 10 men S-Hampton which means we need serious reinforcements in January. Ignore that Levy and be prepared to lose billions in CL money.
With regards to the offside: Technology looking right across the pitch will always do a better job than a person looking through a camera from an oblique angle. Close offside’s have always been frustrating.
No one at the club has the capacity to force Levy’s hand. Levy will do what he feels like.
January will give a clearer picture of where we are.
I’d take a draw if it meant we buy one quality first team player in the Jan window. The sad reality is that we’re more likely to lose and buy another cheap unproven winger from the Dutch league for some reason.
Today is that typical game that’s the difference between being ‘really serious’ (favourites for 4th in the league) and doing alright and keeping in the mix.
Just a lack of quality in the final ball all over the pitch. Credit Soton, they didn’t let us play and defended well, but any of the top 3 would have sailed through.
Our away performances have been pretty weak generally.
Right. Nothing to see when our guy almost torpedoes a finely poised game and then shouts about to cover up for his mistake.
Needs to be sold. He’ll always have a big mistake in him.
Those lines made it look like he was well off but I’m not sure how that’s possible as he was clearly onside at the point the ball was played. The wonders of technology, eh?
Playing Doherty inverted and then Gil too.
Sonny had nothing should’ve pulled him.
Needed another attacking mid when up 1 man I would’ve put Tanguy in or else why have him on the bench?
He was playing the ball back and player came down on top to ball. Many of you don’t play the game. Eh
He’s not good enough.
The game was crying out for an Ndom at half time, shame the lazy cant can barely play 20 minutes without looking like he’s craving a Big Mac w/ extra fries. He’s top of the list to sell, but who’s buying the trainwreck.
Summed up perfectly, but the scum will hit the wall at some stage.
Another punt who will end up on loan, chiefly because he is nowhere near ready to play regularly in the Premiership. More of the same from Levy and one of the reasons why we don’t win anything…
He’s ok, but is a player that would benefit from a season in the championship.
That felt like a loss against an only recently in-form team fighting tooth and nail for every inch (and fouling us off the pitch in the first half). Kane’s goal looked a mile onside to me, did they measure it from his arm? He was leaning to make the run in behind, that’s total nonsense to me and seemed to have been decided before they even started looking at it.
As many have already said on this comments section, this result along with Liverpool should allow Conte and Paratici to force Levy’s hand in January. A dodgy draw against Watford on Saturday and that’s a new CB, creative midfielder and backup striker that we desperately need. Ignore the need for these players at your peril Levy, we deserve Conference league football going by today’s result (had real Mura vibes don’t you think?) but Conte has given us the chance at so much more. BACK THE FRIGGIN MANAGER
It was a plain wrong decision.
Gil is not good enough.
Feel like the way Soton were playing we’d have been better off bringing on NDom for Winks rather than Gil for Royal.
Get off the couch. Poor again. What team have you been watching since Conte came to town. You want to be so right you darn clueless.
You could argue we have 2 goals robbed from us…don’t see how Kane was offside..
Shame. “Possibly one of the best defenders in the world” Dier could have cost us the draw, and it was incredible to see him shout around after his own mistake.
Dele is finished – and if this was an attempt to put him in the shop window, we would have been better served leaving him on the bench. No one’s buying that, no matter how often he’s praised by the media.
Credit to Soton who refused to lie down, worked their socks off and largely restricted our chances.
Can’t help thinking that if we were Liverpool, we’d get daily articles for the next week describing how we were robbed of a win, and there would probably a memorial service or two sponsored by SkySports.
Hehe
The only positive out of that game is that Levy cannot hide behind recent results as an excuse to not bring in the quality needed in January. Too dependant on Kane and Son. No midfield. Little creativity around the edge of the box and the usual brain fart potential of Dier at the back. We need three or four top-quality players in January if we are to stand any chance of a top four place and to take the points of Arsenal.
Massive time waster of a human, is Eric
Can’t believe he’s still with us. Oh wait …… yes I can.
We wouldn’t have scored even if Southampton come off the pitch.
Should have Won but we could have Lost at the Death. That’s the beauty of Football you have to score.
It’s the same every year…a chance to progress….no sorry…
Well, we threw everything at ’em after playing a couple of days ago. They locked it up at the back and played a tough game from the off. We’ve still not been beaten in the league under Conte.
January looks a different kettle of fish from our opposition of late.
Gulp!
Hopefully that’s the end of Dele, winks did ok but too samey to skippy or The Great Dane unlucky with some of the VAR decisions especially Doherty on Forster
Bit of a reality check ,can’t beat a 10 man Southampton.
How ?
Infuriating. We had the chances in the end, but you could see we weren’t going to score.
Nobody’s perfect Conte got it wrong today.
When the pressure is on you can clearly see which players can’t handle it, Dier is right up there on that list.
Should have won that
Agreed
2 points dropped.Arseholes.
The ball is supposed to end up in the net…8hrs could’ve gone by and we’d still have not scored..
Yes he has.
Been much improved of late.
Kane’s wide header at the end sums it up
I like him. Soz
Imagine if it’d gone in. Ha Ha Ha ………
Everyone hates Sanchez but he just saved the game.
Very frustrating watch!
For that mistake alone get rid of Dier, what is he playing at?
Dier’s usual brain fart bailed out.
2 points dropped.
Dier!!!!!!!!!
One clean shot ………..
😂😂😂😂
I’m a Spurs supporter.
Yup. Difficult with 10 men in the box.
I thought Gil was a winger ?
Nice pass by Doherty, moura was in…
Not like the Liverpool chances though ,need a bit of luck.
😂😂😂 that wallet is rarer than the Penny Black.
That’s 6 chances on goal in about 5 minutes.
Oh yeah levy what was I thinking…
Another ?
You have a low quality threshold, clearly.
I’d say the finishing has been the worse thing.
Happens all the time with teams putting men behind the ball, this is where that creative individual comes in……….oh wait we haven’t got one !
4.
If it stays 1-1 at least Conte gets another 10 mil to spend.
We just created 3 chances on goal in as many minutes?!!
Not good enough in the final third. Poor decisions, poor touches, poor passes/crosses
😂
They’re playing pretty well with ten men. There’s still a bit of time ………………
Saints Time wasting. Its there to be won, but being Spursy Saints could get it.
Totally agree ,inverted waaank.
His right is no wand either.
Doherty hasn’t got a left foot.
Too much deadwood and no midfield of any note.
