Romano shares update on star striker with 43 goals; clubs are in advanced negotiations

By Mehdi Gokal -

Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez continues to be linked with a move to Tottenham in January.

The Mexican striker has attracted interest from some of the top clubs around Europe including Spurs due to his insane goal-scoring form.

Since joining Feyenoord last summer, Gimenez has netted 43 goals and assisted 7 others across 65 appearances.

His debut season saw him bag 15 league goals and 3 assists, and this term, he’s already scored 20 goals and 4 assists in just 16 games.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously confirmed Tottenham’s admiration for Gimenez, disclosing that the club has extensively scouted the player during multiple matches.

And a recent report from Todofichajes claimed that the North London club are in ‘very advanced negotiations’ with the Dutch club to sign him.

However, Romano, while speaking on the latest episode of The Debrief, claimed that while Gimenez remains a player the club really likes, there could be a potential hurdle due to the strained relationship between the two clubs stemming from Tottenham’s pursuit of Arne Slot as their manager over the summer.

He said:

“For January a really interesting proposal is needed. I think it could be around €45m (£40m) guaranteed package to Feyenoord, I’m not sure it will be easy at the moment. He is for sure a player monitored by Tottenham because they are following the Dutch League with big interest after they wanted Arne Slot last summer. The relationship with Tottenham and Feyenoord after what happened with Arne Slot last summer has some problems, some small issues, nothing big and serious, but that is also a point to consider.”

TBH Says:

Despite the strained relationship, it should not be a major problem as long as Levy is willing to pay their asking price.

£40m can end up being a bargain for a striker of his quality who has been scoring goals. He could be a great Harry Kane replacement.
