Richarlison’s energy is slowly turning into something tangible for Tottenham [opinion]

When Richarlison signed for Spurs, it was something that made no sense whatsoever to me. I’ve explained this at length previously, but in a nutshell, all those fans enthusiastic about the deal were either those that are hard-wired to get enthusiastic over anyone Spurs buy, or they sounded like those that kept e x p l a i n i n g Dele Alli to me. Two categories of people whose advice I’d be disinclined to value.

Antonio Conte’s tactics have had Spurs playing some very effective football, but not a style that has been particularly easy in the eye. Ahead of the Fulham game, I called for Richarlison to start, if only to add some desperately absent entertainment value. With Son Heung-Min suffering from a dip in form, it seemed like the best direction to suggest.

What we got from the Brazilian was an energized performance that to his credit lasted for the entire 104 minutes.

The assist.

The crosses.

The interceptions.

With 8 touches in the penalty area, the 25-year-old was a busy boy. With any luck and solid guidance, Spurs’ £60million man could end up being worth considerably more than he was at his previous clubs.

He is a breath of fresh air. A different type of player than either Son or Kane, a nice contrast.

A really good signing and exactly what we needed.

I can picture the conversation.

Conte: Eriksen’s available for free. We should sign him.
Levy: Sure, whatever you want.
Conte: All we need to do is match United and pay him 12m upfront and 300k per week.
Levy: I thought you said he was available for free?
Conte: Well, you still have to pay him his wages.
Levy: No deal.

He scored the same amount of goals for Everton last season as did Mahrez score for City. We had a front 2 who were only scoring and yet we were still managing to loose games ,if we have a 3rd striker who doesn’t score as much as the other 2 and we win I am fine with that.

What could he be if he had a few goals under his belt ?????

Happily everything that I had thought Richarlison could bring to the team, is thus far materialising. He has a big heart, plays with passion and is a genuinely hard worker. Plus, as befits Brazil’s current #9, he has a more than decent skill set. (The sublime cross for HK’s goal last week, the volley against the post this week).

Watching the Arse crumble last night and Jesus whining and moaning like a little b*tch, mirroring his manager, vindicated the accusation of ‘flat track bully’ about both the team and him personally. Even though we overpaid for Richy, I believe we chose the right guy for the character of a Conte team and ability required to play across the whole front line.

Sigh, I didn’t say that he doesn’t have any quality did I? I said he’s a player not particularly outstanding quality compared to what’s out there. Paulinho was also first choice for Brazil, he wasn’t a player of outstanding quality either…

… apart from the rather important metric of putting the ball in the back of the net! Yes, Arteta was whingeing as usual, inspite of the fact it was a blatant push in the back by Odegard on Erikssen, who also tripped him for good measure.

I read that Erikssen got a 13 million quid signing on bonus and is on 200 thousand quid a week, so I think that is the reality of why any interest we had in him was dropped. We can’t blame the club on that one, albeit yes, he played well yesterday.

I used to hate this utilisation of players to stand in up front (well apart fromthe Ginger Pele of course). I’m sure we sent a team to Utd in the FA Cup with 2 bit part players as our forwards(?).
So now we have 4 bona fide forwards if one or even 2 are out we still have 2 it has taken a long time but we are there now.

One thing I do need explaining though is how our m/f which has been overrun recently was so good on Saturday.
Serious question they were both vying for MOTM I dislike 2 in m/f teams load theirs and get control so why did it work out on Sat – did Fulham just suit out style?

When Mane left liverpool after signing a an improved contract since he joined them he was only on 110k a week ,I read it on a liverpool blog after they signed Diaz ahead of us ,I went on there to see if they were linked with Diaz before us . One of the main reason Mane left is because he felt he was not offered improved terms longer ago. So I dont even think Levy the knobhead really even bothered trying to get him

I think Ericksen could have done a job for us and add that creative link up play we sadly lack. He wanted to stay in London but as usual we showed little ambition to bring him back because of course we have so much creativity in our midfield at the moment. Looking at Arsenal and Man Utd they both look sharper and more fluid than our players and move the ball with more pace and directness.

But I was assured that he couldn’t actually be a good addition to.our.club because of some statistics. Until stats can reflect things like pulling defenders.out of position, putting fear into opposition making them stand off, and until we start looking at work rate among other things, then stats don’t mean much. Winks probably had a very high pass completion percentage.. making safe sideways and backwards passes will do that, without ever opening up a defense.

We don’t do marquee though do we? Levy makes sure of that. Son was heavily questioned as an attacker when he signed, especially as he was a midfielder in Germany! He hasn’t done badly though. If Richarlison can push on with his progression we will all be happy.

Agreed. You think about some of the numpties we’ve signed and that even after a season of total ‘pap’ there have been supporters say ‘He’ll come good……just give him time……he has to settle!’. Kulu, Bentancur and Richarlison have turned up from day 1. This is a positive surely, yet two of these are getting unfairly criticised? If we had to wait for Richarlison to get going we would have been a fair few points worse off that is for sure. Richarlison can get better too. If he doesn’t I’ll be the first to point it out.

Like Everton, we have quite a bit of dross wearing our shirt. Specifically in defence. We lack any attacking MF option. Couple the two together doesn’t help the forward players. Yes, we have Son & Kane but it’s noticeable how deep Kane is playing at times in order to become the link between MF and Son. Charli increases the chances along with Kulu. Charli has aspects to his game that we lack in other players.

His style of play compliments the others in the forward line better than Stevie B did. He can play more effectively with his back to goal, which gives him more versatility to play as a ‘9’ as well. He’s not a player of particularly outstanding quality but he’s got the attributes that make him fit in with what we already have.

Haaland only cost less because he had a low transfer release cause.. He’s worth more than twice what they got him for…. Haalands valued at 135 million on transfermarkt, only Mbappe is worth more.
Haaland was always going to end up at a top club like City or Madrid etc.. We are not shopping in the same transfer league pool as the best quite yet. We need to start winning cups and the league to attract the likes of Haaaland and De Ligt and Bellingham etc. As I said before it’s not about financial clout. The stadium has given us that… I’m sure we approached top players like De ligt and Kessie… We couldn’t get Traore or Raphinha because Barca wanted them and they’re not even world class.

Maybe Ten Haag’s sides can win ugly too? Arteta strikes me as a coach who doesn’t seem to be great at dealing with pressure when the tide is against him or his team. It’s as if as long as everything comes together nicely his team plays well.

However when it comes down to still being resilient when they aren’t getting the rub of the green they seem to lose their way a bit. And that ‘bit’ can cost at crucial points in the season and in games. Today they lost 3-1 despite playing ‘well’, a perfect example of this…

Whatever one thinks of Richy, it’s clear that he’s certainly an upgrade on Stevie and a far better option replacing Harry at the 10 then Vinnie, Llorente and others we’ve had. We just need more signings like this to compete.

Certainly is considering the minutes he’s had in comparison to Sancho. He also set up Hojbjerg yesterday if I’m not mistaken! Grealish assisted 3 goals the whole of last season and only scored 3. I do think Richarlison should have scored at least 2-3 already, but he hasn’t missed anything glaringly obvious (yet) and not had anything laid on a plate like Anthony today.

This was mentioned on TalkRubbish radio, and is obviously correct, where City pulled a blinder to get Haaland. Even at his cost we were never in the reckoning. That said, he was cheaper than Richarlison, but his wages are rumoured to be between £350k and £400k per week. That is astronomical and only a cheating club who regularly breaks FFP could afford it.

A more realistic comparison of deals would be between Richarlison, Sancho, Grealish and Anthony. Whether we could have had the latter for £40m is irrelevant, just like moaning about Haaland’s buy-out, but who would we rather have today? Richarlison is the cheapest and arguably just as good as any of them.

I’m with you Cow in the third camp of characters that rate Richy but not everyone Levy imports and not Dele in recent years.

I’m not even sure 60m is an overpay considering Utd paid 86m for the similar but not as good Brazilian Antony last week.

CowSpurs
CowSpurs

Bit harsh to categorise anyone who thought this was a good deal and disagreed with you in to the the 2 camps of “hard-wired to get enthusiastic over anyone Spurs buy, or they sounded like those that kept explaining Dele Alli to me”. I wouldn’t put myself in any of those camps.

Richarlison is proven in the EPL, maybe not with top class teams, but I don’t judge players on that. City don’t necessarily buy players from top clubs, some did well in lower ranked teams to our own (Grealish, Stones and Phillips). There are many tangibles that make a player a worthy signing. I do think we overpaid by about £15m, but Richarlison has pace, a work ethic that puts many to shame and aggression. My Evertonian mates rated him highly because he gave everything for the shirt. As we have had plenty of charlatans who couldn’t care less that was good enough for me.

Richarlison is not perfect, he should/could have scored 2-3 already (maybe this is his achilles heel in that he hasn’t scored as many as he should have for Watford or Everton), but he isn’t a robot footballer, he makes us sit forward when he gets the ball and from yesterday’s performance where he linked up well with Kane, to when he won the ball v Forest and set up Kane the future looks brighter than some of our past signings.

If the volley had nestled in the net I don’t think we’d be branding him ‘just energy’ – it’s way too early to make that judgement.

One of our biggest crimes in recent seasons has been a lack of energy against the deadbeat PL sides and if we get an extra 10pts thanks to his ‘dogged’ style and the example the sets to his teammates he could be a £60 mill bargain.

So far he’s been directly involved in a goal near enough every time he’s played for us, so so far that’s definitely enough for me.

modestly better players’

I would say Kane, Son and Deki are significantly better than DCL, wee Gordon or whoever else he was lining up with the last few seasons.

I’d say probably the best players he’s ever played alongside on a regular basis and that might lift his game a lot.

The best thing yesterday? He seems to already have a good understanding with Kane.

JimmyGrievance

I said at the outset the Jury’s out on him. He left Watford with the intent of Everton building a team around him. It never really happened and we only saw occasional glimpses of what he’s about.

Fast forward and with modestly better players around him and a manager with passion. Charli boy is proving to be a winner in my book.

I love the energy he brings . I love the passion and shithousery. We’ve lacked both at crucial times in seasons past.

Compare the spend on him and that waste of French space we paid similar for and it’s clear so far we got this one right.

Let’s hope the other new signings bring as much to the party as nobody is looking like they’re going to run away with the league.

Finally… and not on topic. I’d laugh if Leicester went down.

Quote:

It was claimed that Haaland had a 75million euro release clause inserted into his contract at Dortmund and this worked out at about £63m.
But it is understood the release clause is in fact £51m and City’s deal will total £85.6m once agents fees and bonuses are factored in.

City will hand Haaland a package deal worth £375,000 per week. His wage is just shy of the £400,000-a-week Kevin De Bruyne earns at City with Jack Grealish now third behind Haaland on £300,000-a-week.

You’d have to factor in agents fees, and wages, I’d guess Haaland is on a lot higher wage than Richarlison. I’d also guess that the fine details of Haaland’s transfer would make for interesting reading. There was a report a year or two ago that Man United were interested in Haaland but when they heard about the agents fees, fees for sundry hangers on and the demand from a relative to a cut of any future transfer fee away from United the club walked away from any deal.

That was a real cloak and dagger deal for City – everyone knows they got the player at AT LEAST half price for various reasons.

The deal was effectively sealed seasons ago.

How much would City demand for Haaland tomorrow and how much us with Richarlison?

There’ll be £100 million difference between the two figures!
