Report: Tottenham transfer of attacking midfielder with 25 goals & 13 assists collapses on deadline day

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Alfie Devine’s loan move to Birmingham City collapsed on transfer deadline day.

Reports from Football Insider revealed that the 20-year-old midfielder, who remains under contract with Spurs until June 2027, was close to securing a temporary switch to the Championship side, but the deal unexpectedly collapsed at the last moment.

Devine, who joined Tottenham from Wigan Athletic in 2020 for approximately £300,000, has made just two senior appearances for the club. Despite limited first-team action, he earned recognition as Spurs’ youngest-ever goalscorer during his debut in the FA Cup against Marine in January 2021.

After dealing with some injury setbacks, Devine spent the first half of last season on loan at Port Vale in League One, where he made a notable impact by scoring three goals and providing three assists in 26 appearances.

His impressive performances led to a recall to Tottenham in January 2024, followed by another loan to Plymouth Argyle in the Championship. Although his time at Plymouth had its challenges, his potential shone through, prompting Plymouth to consider bringing him back for another season.

Over the past season, Devine scored three goals and provided six assists in 43 appearances across both loan spells.

His most productive stint came with the Tottenham U21s, where he scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 49 games. Overall, Devine has accumulated 25 goals and 13 assists in 116 games across all levels.

With the Birmingham City loan deal now off the table, Tottenham will need to reassess their plans for Devine’s development. The club must find a suitable destination for their promising young midfielder to continue gaining valuable experience.
