Report: Tottenham to take advantage of Premier League club’s financial loss to try and sign world class midfielder

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in making a move for Leicester City’s James Maddison once again, after failing to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.

Maddison has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season, with nine goals and five assists to his name in just 18 appearances. This has inevitably led to a number of top clubs showing an interest in the Englishman, but Spurs are said to be one of the frontrunners for his signature.

The North London side’s lack of creativity has been a major issue this season, with Harry Kane often left isolated up front due to the team’s inability to create chances.

Maddison’s ability to unlock defences with his incisive passing and eye for goal would undoubtedly add a new dimension to Tottenham’s attack. However, the main stumbling block could once again be the price tag that Leicester City have placed on the 26-year-old.

Leicester are said to value Maddison at around £60 million, a fee that Tottenham were not willing to meet in the summer. With the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic still being felt across football, clubs are understandably wary of spending big money on transfers.

However, with Leicester City reportedly recording a loss of £92.5 million for the financial year ending May 22 according to The Telegraph, they may be more open to selling their star midfielder in order to balance the books.

Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for Maddison, and made two bids for him in the summer which were both rejected by Leicester City. The Magpies have been backed by wealthy owners and are reportedly willing to spend big in the transfer market, so Tottenham could face competition from them if they do decide to make a move for Maddison.

The key factor in this transfer saga could be where the two clubs finish in the Premier League this season. A strong finish to the season could see them qualify for the Champions League, which would give them an advantage over Newcastle in the race for Maddison’s signature.

Another factor to consider is Tottenham’s managerial situation. Conte is set to leave the club at the end of the season with the club linked with a number of a number of potential replacements including former manager Mauricio Pochettino. The new manager’s philosophy and style of play could have a major impact on Tottenham’s transfer targets.
