Report: Tottenham, Manchester United to rival each other for pending free agent goalkeeper

Tottenham Hotspur brought Pierluigi Gollini on a loan deal from Atalanta to possibly be the successor for Hugo Lloris this past summer. The France international’s contract was due to expire this June; however, the 26-year-old has yet to crack the starting eleven.

Furthermore, since the arrival of manager Antonio Conte, the Italian tactician has leaned heavily on Lloris, leading to a new contract extension. As a result, the 35-year-old will remain with the north London club until 2024.

With Gollini on the way out when his loan expires, Tottenham will be in the market for a goalkeeper that’s content with being a backup. Recent reports are linking Spurs to West Bromwich Albion’s Sam Johnstone.

However, they might have some competition for the 29-year-old. According to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, Manchester United and Tottenham are ready to rival each other for the free signing this summer.

Johnstone won’t be extending with The Baggies and seeks a return to the Premier League. A move for the Championship goalkeeper makes since it’s a free agent signing, so they don’t need to spend much for the position on the squad.

This season, Johnstone has made 167 appearances for West Brom, conceding 216 goals and recording 45 clean sheets since joining the club in 2018.
