Report says Spurs could meet Mourinho’s replacement next week

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham has reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Jose Mourinho’s replacement and they could meet with one of their targets next week.

The Special One is under serious pressure to deliver in north London as his team struggles to make the top four places.

He has led them to the final of the Carabao Cup and winning that competition might buy him some time.

However, if that doesn’t happen, he could be relieved of his duties, especially if they have to settle for a Europa League place again.

Several managers have been linked with a move to Spurs as his replacement and one of them is Maurizio Sarri.

The ex-Chelsea boss has been jobless since he was fired from his role at Juventus last summer.

He won the Europa League with the Blues and also won Serie A with Juve before getting sacked last season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport says he is one manager who might replace Mourinho and a meeting with Spurs is imminent.

The report also linked Sarri with a move to the likes of AS Roma and a return to Napoli, but Spurs might tempt him with managing in the Premier League once again when this season ends.

Indeed. the lack of ambition is historic with ENIC – carrick, berba, modric, bale plus those you name above all saw it. The 5 year hoddle project was shelved with indecent haste and Jol had the rug whipped out out from under him just as he was threatening some sort of consistency and success. Put simply, Poch over achieved. He wasn’t supposed to do so well, effectively calling Levy’s bluff. Levy bought him off ( fat contract), Poch then got depressed (it was evident) I assume at having compromised himself which affected the team as a whole.

I suppose we’ll never know. Clearly the Levy mismanaged delays on the stadium led to us not buying players in the window as all funds had to go to that. Poch I think was no longer to seek alternative cheaper options when his proposed targets were deemed too expensive.
Levy is for best position possible for lowest spend, auditor football, which shortchanges the fans who the highest ticket prices.
I agree with you our salary position can other clubs was instrumental in our decline. Walker and Rose both knew how much more they could earn elsewhere, one left and the other downed tools. Other players too were aware that they could earn more elsewhere.

Agree 100%. but even with hindsight levy wouldn’t have provided the investment required to take us up to and keep us at the elite level. There is no desire to have a wage bill (liability) the size of city, utd, pool, chats or even Woolwich
the aim is to be sneaking 4th, bag some champs league and tv ££££s and develop and sell players those that can’t see this are destined to continue to spit vitriol and nonsense .cognitive dissonance. It’s world wide at the moment

There’s a phrase you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. In my eyes and many others he did a great job inheriting a dysfunctional squad and replacing it with a vibrant , largely English attacking side that was by and large great to watch. He took the club to uncharted heights in league positions that were last achieved by the double side the best side in the clubs history. In documented clips he told Levy to be brave and Levy wasn’t prepared to make the investment necessary to take that step. From then on the relationship was fractured and it was inevitable he would leave. Most felt Jose was a high risk strategy and fans on the whole wanted him to succeed. This seasons not over so prejudging how events may unfold is a risky business. Clearly Levy can’t be happy with how things are playing out and Covid has obviously affected things but I wonder know if Levy could have turned the clock back he might have backed Poch when asked to.

Klopp got about 175m to spend on his side the year before that final, Spurs signed nobody for 12 months ahead of it. That’s why we didn’t get over the line.

We’d beaten Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley the previous season. Criminal neglect by the owners, Poch was working with shirt buttons compared to the teams he had to beat. Yet you ignore this? Plonker…

Is that net or gross? Show the data if it’s true.

Like I said, if our net spend was 17th in the league then the teams above us in that count must therefore have team expenditure in excess of a billion. Are we supposed to believe that a team like Everton, or Southampton even, spent more than a billion on their teams?

Does not stack up, in any way whatsoever. Show the data.

Your argument doesn’t stand up managers success is predominantly determined by budget. Is Sean Dyche a bad manager? In my eyes he does a brilliant job in keeping Burnley in the premier league year after year. He will never win a trophy with them. In your eyes he’s a failure. If Pep was at Burnley great coach though he is they’d still win nothing.
You are entitled to your view of Poch or Botch as you sadly prefer to call him but i believe it’s not one shared in the wider footballing community. Hence why United came calling for him before they very reluctantly appointed Jose. That didn’t work out well but things seem to working out Ok now.
Poch will have to win the Ecl at PSG and if he doesn’t he will be moved on like those before him.

Football teams win stuff, not bricks and mortar. A billion pound team? How do you get to that when our net spend was 17th highest in the league? That would mean three quarters of the League each spent over a billion on their football teams too. A billion? Wow…

The League Cup is the wooden spoon trophy and the Champions League is the elite competition. A team needs to win far more football matches to even qualify for it than to win a domestic cup.

So therefore if you are comparing number of wins to achieve either then top 4 is the greater if the two achievements. There is no argument.

Besides, Levy wanted top 4 if possible. Which is why Jose gets another 2m if we qualify (on top of his 15m basic)…

So where do Espanyol or Spurs fit in terms of football budget in their respective leagues? He’ll probably win things at PSG just as Moany won stuff with lots of money years ago too. Ramos was never approached to manage a club as big as PSG because he wasn’t as good. He was ok, I have nothing against the bloke. So you’re obviously wrong, as usual…

Yes, there’s no environment for success. Of course, it would be tremendously difficult to compete with the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea anyway with their superior financial resources but the way our esteemed chairman goes about things, in the process throwing our money down the tubes building an unnecessarily grandiose stadium (though for all that a pretty ugly one, exterior-wise),makes matters worse.

Wonderful opportunities for us under Poch to perhaps pinch a league title or Champions League were squandered while the chairman enhanced his property portfolio. I shall always loathe him because, without very favourable circumstances(ie a rival playing full time in a European super league or having a very heavy fixture load due to an expansion of European competition) it’s unlikely that, at 66 years old, I shall ever now see us win the league title. Alas I was six and a half and not a football fan in 1961 when we last won it.

Not sure if you’re in accord with me or not. I was trying to make the point that Poch, unlucky not to win a trophy, did a remarkable job at Spurs and while Ramos, I assume, won the Europa League, you don’t get a cup to show for the altogether far superior feat of reaching the CL final, so who wins the most trophies can be entirely misleading. Like I say, there are trophies….and trophies! I get a smug satisfaction from seeing Sevilla fail every time in the CL helping to prove my assessment of the two European competitions and soon there is to be the European Conference!

To compare the league positions Poch achieved, prioritized by Levy over domestic cups, with Ramos League Cup and then nearly taking us down is utterly ludicrous IMO

We were warned that Ramos was a mediocrity and he had an assistant who was largely responsible for Seville’s success.

Luck’s involved; just because Juande Ramos won ONE league cup and Poch won no trophies doesn’t, point of fact, make the former the better manager. In four consecutive seasons, Poch got us 3rd,2nd,3rd,4th and that despite having to play most of their home games for two seasons at Wembley and with a chairman who was a horse’s neck to him.

Apart from that league cup triumph, Ramos was a disaster; we were bottom when he left. And Sevilla are a bigger club than Espanol. What did Ramos win with Sevilla? The castrated UEFA Cup that is now the Europa League? Getting to just the quarter finals of the Champions League is tougher than WINNING the Europa and Poch got us to the FINAL of the Champions League’.

In comparing the two European competitions, it should be noted that in the same period that Sevilla have won the Europa five or six(?) times, admittedly, in its own way, a remarkable achievement, the Spanish club have played in the CL seven times: they ONCE reached the quarter-finals, four times they went out at the last 16 stage, once they didn’t get out of the group and, once, they didn’t even get as far as the group! All this tends to back up my assertion that the Europa is a vastly inferior tournament, MOSTLY (though you can get an emerging force) for also rans and mediocrities. Poch. and Ramos? No contest! The Argentine in a different class.

The Chelsea managers get proper backing so take the punt on Roman. We have Levy and no manager will sustain success in that model. As proven by the current and previous managers who are both as competent as Ramos.

Juande ramos I would say is a better manager than Botch so far.. Until your hero can win multiple titles there is no argument. He has to win alot at PSG to prove himself, I hope he does, I’m not bitter at all… Ramos won titles with both Sevilla and Spurs, inferior teams in tougher leagues… Botch couldn’t win with Espanyol or Spurs.. Managers are judged on what they win.. Botch still has time to become better of course, he can improve his resume… Banging on about Chelsea managers is pointless, they bang out one or two a year, probably the worst club here for sacking managers too quickly. I’m suprised any manager wants to go there knowing that even if they win they will be sacked as soon as they hit bad form..
