Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to sign a central defender when the transfer window reopens in January.

The North London club need more depth in their defensive unit and it will be interesting to see if they can bring in the right additions in the coming weeks.

According to Football Insider, the injury to Micky van de Ven has forced Ange Postecoglou to consider his options and it will be interesting to see who they end up with. Tottenham are now keen on signing a quality central defender during the summer transfer window as their priority.

They also wanted to sign a defender in the summer, but they failed to complete a deal for their top targets.

Tottenham currently have three reliable central defenders at their disposal and signing another quality player could complete their defensive unit for the foreseeable future. They are well-stocked in the fullback areas.

Tottenham have impressed going forward this season, but they need to tighten up defensively if they want to finish high up the table. They will be hoping to secure Champions League qualification and push for domestic trophies. The right additions will certainly help them finish the season strongly.

Meanwhile, Van de Ven is expected to return from his injury blow after the international break this month. Cristian Romero is currently starting in the central defensive unit alongside Radu Dragusin in the absence of the Dutch international defender. Tottenham have had to use Ben Davies as a makeshift central defender at times as well.

They need to sign a specialist central defender in January, and they certainly have the finances to improve that area of the squad.

Spurs have been linked with a host of names in recent months, and they need to bring in someone who will accept the role of a squad player. Romero and Van de Ven are the first-choice starters for Postecoglou and the new defender will be a backup option to them.
