Report: Liverpool was keen on pursuing Spurs star had they not finished in the top four

There were many questions regarding Tottenham Hotspur in the final weeks of the Premier League season after conceding the top four spot to Arsenal.

The future of manager Antonio Conte was up in the air, but now a new report suggests that missing the UEFA Champions League could have been catastrophic.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold (via Anfield Watch) stated that Liverpool was keen on targeting Son Heung-min this summer if Tottenham had not finished in the top four.

According to Gold, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has long been an admirer of the 29-year-old. With The Reds planning for the prospect of losing either Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah this summer, Son was a top target to replace those two forwards.

There had been talks about testing Tottenham’s financial willpower with a big-money move for the South Korean attacker if the north London club had failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

However, with Spurs finishing in the top four, Liverpool has scratched Son as their possible replacement for either Salah or Mane.
