Tottenham Hotspur were keen on appointing Hugo Viana as the club’s new sporting director.

According to a report from Mais Futebol, Spurs made an approach to appoint him as the club’s sporting director last season. Apparently, Aston Villa were keen on appointing him as well. However, it seems that Manchester City have won the race for his signature and he will replace Txiki Begiristain in the near future.

Viana has done an exceptional job at Sporting CP and he has done well to unearth several talented young players. He has excelled when it comes to selling players for substantial profits as well.

There is no doubt that he could have been a quality acquisition for Tottenham and it will be interesting to see if the North London outfit decide to move on to other targets. Since the departure of Fabio Paratici, they are thought to be on the lookout for a quality sporting director.
