Report: Antonio Conte wants to spend £83 million on two players who will solve a major problem.

According to the Italian publication Inter Live, Antonio Conte is preparing an £83 million double transfer for two Italy defenders, Alessandro Bastoni and Giorgio Scalvini with Bastoni expected to cost £48 million.

As per the report from The Athletic, there is less certainty that Conte will sign a new contract before the end of the season. But, if anything, spending big in the transfer market will persuade the Italian manager to stay at Spurs. January was among them.

And Daniel Levy will be aware of this. The club’s chairman will know that he will need to dig deeper into the club’s finances if he wants to keep Conte.

According to the most recent report, Conte is interested in Bastoni, a player with whom Spurs had been closely associated recently.

However, he is not the only defender they desire. Tottenham is also interested in signing Atalanta midfielder Giorgio Scalvini. According to Inter Live, Scalvini will cost Spurs £35 million.

If Spurs are to challenge for a top 4 finish and silverware this season they definitely need to improve their defense and the signing of the two Italian defenders will do just that. Bastoni is a top-class centre-back, one of the best in Serie A, and is expected to make an immediate impact. Scalvini is still young but with a lot of potential and will be one for the future.

It remains to be seen whether Levy will give Conte the go-ahead to spend more than £80 million on two defenders. Recent history suggests that it is unlikely. But if he wants Conte to stay, he may have no choice.
