Pundit weighs in on whether Celtic will exercise the option to buy clause on Spurs loanee

Despite being 23-years-old, Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers has had several loan stints hoping to find a long-term home as it seems there’s no place for him at the north London club.

Carter-Vickers recently stated that he’s enjoying his time with the Scottish giants, but the club has yet to indicate whether they’ll exercise the option to buy clause, which is a fee of around £6-million.

BBC Radio pundit Noel Whelan spoke to Football Insider about the matter and whether he sees Celtic deciding to keep Carter-Vickers long-term, as the defender is open to remaining past June when the loan expires.

“Well, after Thursday night [against Bayer Leverkusen], probably not [making the move permanent]. But you can’t just take it on the one game. You’ve got to give him the opportunity to give the full season to Celtic,” Whelan said.

“Let’s see what happens. They’ve got a cup final to come up; they’re not far off the top with Rangers in the league. That’s going to be a good battle. Maybe being out of Europe frees them up a little bit to concentrate on that. I know it’s an old cliche, but Rangers will still be in Europe; that does take its toll.”

Tottenham is heading in a different direction when it comes to central defenders. They already brought in Cristian Romero, and there’s reported interest in players like Stefan de Vrij.

As a result, Carter-Vickers won’t see minutes as a starter consistently, which is why he needs to use this opportunity with Celtic and secure a permanent transfer.
