Poch’s Baffling Post Arsenal Presser [video]

By The Boy -

Dear me that was a tough watch. Lord only knows what the poor Client Reference Numbers at the Empticrates went through.

Hopelessness.

Hope. No hope. Bob Hope.

It feels massively irrational to blame and entire game upon the sheer stupidity of a couple of bad starting selections, but the desperately earnest truth is that fine margins win football matches.

Against Chelsea we were imperious.

Against Inter we were indefatigable.

Here’s Poch’s post match presser.

Both Foyth and Aurier were the weak spot, all their attacks were down that left channel and it was deliberate. Play Toby and it’s a very different scenario though.

Aurier is inconsistent at best and an accident waiting to happen more often French than not…

This is he first time I’ve been properly annoyed with Poch, he sometimes has too much belief in his methods and seems to be in denial when he messes up.

It’s almost as if he approaches the whole thing as a development coach rather than a manager with the priority on winning matches being secondary.

This was a bad game to lose for several reasons;
1. It’s the NLD.
2. Winning could have been pivotal points wise, keeping pressure on Liverpool going into Christmas.
3. Putting daylight between us and Woolwich.
4. Bursting their bubble and derailing them rather than handing them confidence.

As it stands, it has just made our league campaign a lot tougher than it needed to be. Pick Toby and it doesn’t happen…

Great post Finn.

Poch said in another interview that many players gave the ball away at the back and that Forth was one of the best players on the pitch and messed up no more than anyone else. However, as you point out this isn’t the point when it comes to selecting Foyth over Toby, it’s about calmness, organisation and experience.

Aurier always seems to be one step away from a brain phart, against Chavski he wasn’t under pressure and although Foyth was singled out by Hazard there wasn’t the high intensity press and players piling forward into that channel over and over again.

Foyth played alongside Toby against Chavs and inter so he’s thinking why change it? Ok, fair enough but he more pertinent question is why don’t you change it at half time? Replace Foyth with Toby (or even put Toby in a back three and use either Aurier or Sissy as wingback).

Foyth played fairly well as an individual yesterday and he obviously has quality but the blend at the back for a game like this was wrong, we looked disorganised and nervy every time they attacked and that affected the whole game. For Poch to say that it wasn’t an issue that affected the game is utter guano.

Had Toby played from the start or in the second half we would have won that game, I have absolutely no doubt…

I agree on Sissy, he still runs a lot with very little product. Yet now its accepted as a grand step rather than what it is – a severe lack of anything better in the middle. I also agree with the substation bit, perhaps if Poch rotated earlier in a game we would be harder to read and easier to rest players.

Unless it’s Danny Rose, with that unforgettable volley. I was watching that when it happened, but re-watching the footage, BAE was on the pitch, ‘Arry must have brought Danny on as a winger.

Just a suggestion:

Foyth wasn’t the issue here at the end of the day. It was mainly Dier. Despite the goal and a semi-decent first half, when he dropped back into defence he was dog shite. It looked like he’d no experience there whatsoever. The 3rd goal was deflected, but he wasn’t tight enough to the player. The fourth goal he missed the ball and let that little scamp run through on goal.

If you still want to blame Poch for not selecting Tobes I feel, you’re still well within your rights to do so. Dier is no longer the player we thought we were developing.

Playing VerDonkey and the penalty-prone child in central defense was ludicrous, but this was always going to be a rough one having just played two high intensity matches in the week leading up to it with a paper thin squad. Need healthy, competent fullbacks to rotate and we don’t have that. Need a proper backup striker, don’t have that either. Need a manager who isn’t having some bizarre lovers’ quarrel with our best defender. I’m left wondering how the likes of West Ham manage to get in players like Arnautovich, who might be the grittiest, hardest working, and one of the most technically capable strikers in the league while our second striker is a geriatric spanish lump with the pace of an oil tanker who can’t get a game, much less provide any real competition to Kane. Even the dildo brothers are making Levy look like a little clown.

That’s the thing right, “paper thin squad”, or just not a good enough squad. So it all comes back to the genius move of not buying a single player in July. The sooner uncle Joe farks off and dies the better.

Lots of passionate comments on here and overall a balanced overview of what happened today needs to taken from it.

Two things I consider important today. Firstly we looked jaded and leggy, the ‘performance of the season’ against Chavs and the grinding out the 1-0 over Inter made this the third of 3 very tough games in a week.

Then there’s the not playing Toby. It is tterly indefensible no matter what Poch says. It’s as if you are deliberately handicapping yourself.

Poch might think Foyth is capable and he might well be but in a fixture like that you need as much organisation and game management as possible. Experience gives you that, plus Toby would walk into any back four in the world.

Toby not playing cost us the game because Emery targeted Foyth as a weakness and it was too much to ask of him and when you have a perfectly fit Toby on the bench his reasoning just doesn’t stand up.

The NLD is not a plaything or an opportunity to blood youngsters. The first time I’ve seriously questioned a decision by Poch.

However, the bigger picture is that he’s transformed us so one major clanger we need to let go, but boy is it annoying…

SpursGoliath

This is the first season under Poch he’s seemed to really try and rotate/manage the full squad to this extent – I couldn’t name our definitive ‘strongest 11’ as easily as before. This is good and bad.

Unless you have two £50 million+ athletes in each position (cough, Manchester City) then it’s a risky old business.

Three ‘must win’ games in a week…we NEARLY got away with it. We hung in there in the first half but second half no one got a hold of the ball for us. We also got dragged into too much emotional handbags off the ball, it threatened to become a repeat of the Chelsea season killer when Leicester secured the league. Disappointed in that, thought we’d become more professional, calm and ruthless.

Yes Arsenal had an inconvenient fixture but the fact is they warmed up for this match with a dead rubber. We had another ’emotional night’ avoiding getting wiped out in the CL. I can only imagine that helped them and hindered us. See what happens in the cup game :/

In the cold light of day, and passions abated a little, I have decided to see the loss as a good thing (no honestly). I was hearing things from fans like “see we didn’t need to buy anyone” or “best start to a PL season” and the funniest, “lets keep getting points and sooner or later City will slip and we could win the league”. For as great as the “positive attitude” can be, you have to be careful not to slip into delusion. I would say our club decided very early on that we would not win the league this season, I would say it was at the point when they decided that Grealish should be our main target of the summer, and compounded the decision when they decided to buy no-one. Everything since then has been about making the most out of a tired squad. Now I am hoping even the dumb dumbs will see this season for what it is, a stop gap, a money spinner, a freebie for Levy to save cash. Now for me, there is only a handful of things that can stop this season from turning into a full on clusterf… that is:
1) TOP 4!! for as much as a fan I would prefer a trophy, to go into the new stadium as a Europa league side would be the final embarrassment (especially after the signae of the only place in London to see CL… and worse if Arsenal and Chelsea get there!)
2) a Trophy – The FA cup and League cup are still there to be won
3) Remain in the CL – This is a stretch, and possibly not possible, but if you are giving up on the league before the first ball is kicked, your plan should be at least the knockouts of the CL!!
4) This is potentially the most important – we don’t lose any players we don’t wish to be shot of, so that means keeping Toby, Jan, Eriksen…
5) actually strengthen in the summer, choose some key positions and buy legitimate quality (Central mid, Wing backs, THEN cover up top).

I think we decided as early as closing last season that the league was not our this year. This is the first time in many years I think its the case, but you can tell by the transfer policy, by the focus of the stadium, hell by the players attitudes in the early games.

We stuffed that up good and proper.
Sadly the worst performance came at the worst time. We didn’t learn anything new though, our short comings are obvious and it feels like wasted energy to focus on these issues again and again – save to say that without investment we will never be able to produce consistently high performances such as the two games previous.

Its no time to overreact. Bad performances happen and Poch is as much to blame for that as anyone, regardless of any other situations around the club (stadium, tight wanker of an owner etc.).

We have Saints up next who have just sacked Hughes. This is not the best news for us as there is usually always a bounce back effect when a manager walks from an under performing team. We will do well to put the NLD behind us and concentrate on this one

Finn

Changing a central defender is not simply about replacing one of the world’s best with quality player but one who still has “L” plates on, its also the consequential effect on the players around him and in turn the players around them.

Davies is a better player when he plays next to Vertonghen; Trippier is too when playing next to Toby. Aurier’s discomfitures are eased by Toby’s reading and adjusting positions, but Foyth does not work with these guys in the same manner, he not yet experienced enough.

The grief Aurier was giving him was an example of this; it was in fact Aurier who stuffed up but he layed into Foyth because Foyth had not read the game and provided cover that Toby would have.

In fairness Foyth I think does very well and is a class youngster who will be a top class player; but right now he’s green. Verts and Toby cover the defensive deficiencies in our full backs and are good enough to make up for some of the bad passes and being played into hot spots. But Foyth is not that good or that wise (yet); nor is he good enough or wise enough to compensate for those stuff ups his team mates make the way Toby can.

One certainly if not both of the penalties he gave away at Wolves, were down to him not being able to deal with shortcomings of Trippier dropping him in it. The fumble on the half way line yesterday was a result of an Aurier throw in that was powered the ball directly at Foyth’s shins, again Foyth takes the blame but there’s some contributing factors, did Aurier do it deliberately?

There is also a knock on in the interaction between Aurier and Sissoko. Sissoko was totally lost last night partly because the defensive coherence behind him was totally blown. This in turn makes things tighter for Eriksen and so on.

Poch f**cked up right royally with selection, but also failing to act to change things with substitutions.

Not one “journalist” asked the question?????

NLD magnified the deeper issues at the club,
Which all stem from levy’s cowardness like it’s not my fault stadiums is behind, it’s tough buying players or sorting contracts , i’ll hide behind press releases and Cullen rather than come out directly……
This behaviour trait is speading through the club and effecting all decisions, even on the pitch.
You can argue about moments as and choices in individual matches, but this season we have generally been poor, actually so poor that people are starting to laud sissoko as such an improved player when in reality we’ve probably fallen back to his level. Players are making poorer choices in moments on the pitch and this is shown the comments about individual players this season.
This has effected Poch as well as he manages more by numbers like resting a player on (probably) sports science dept est on likelihood the player may break down or subs at 68-70 mins and you probably can pick your own personal favourite.
Poch is loosing his edge, becoming more like levy rather than a brave new world mantra he started as, he needs to find that again or the previous seasons maybe the pinnacle of his managerial career (which I truly hope it’s not).
The club motto is to dare is to do, thinking about it isn’t doing it’s just a pipe dream.

Spot on, he’s decided to integrate Foyth, even in high pressure games. It went ok against Cheatski but today it didn’t because they overloaded our left side to try and exploit the weaknesses in Foyth and Aurier’s games.

It’s horses for courses, however a big away derby game like this you don’t leave the best central defender in the league on the bloody bench, was he worried about upsetting Foyth? Also Jan wasn’t match sharp either, so for me it’s Toby and either one of Foyth or Jan alongside him.

I think Poch was trying to push his luck and see how Foyth might grow into a game like this. It backfired, it’s not about even how well Foyth played individually, it’s about experience and organisation at the back.

They pressed high from the start, conceded an early pen and from then on it was nerves all round every time Wooworths attacked. Had Toby been in there it would have been different story today, his absence seemed to make us look fragile.

Woolwich did well with their pressing but we were really poor. It was almost like after the win at Old Trafford, we started to believe we had it all sussed out and suddenly lost our intensity and the same has now happened after beating Chavs and Inter. There’s a mental weakness where we seem to become over confident after a big win or run of wins…

Poch is a perfect fit for a young Spurs team under Levy’s dictatorship…he took the big contract so is fair game for criticism, however the buck starts from the top as far as I’m concerned….Poch screwed up today, however nobody blames Levy, its always “yeh but”……the right thing to do would’ve been to cancel the pre season tour based on the players we had in the World Cup and not having a “home”… a tall ask I agree, but, if Levy would’ve invested the money made in such tours back into the squad then you could argue either way but they don’t….they take the money from football but it doesn’t go back into the football…

He made silly comments about Arsenal not being our no. 1 rivals and compounded the arrogance by dropping Toby for one of our buggest games of the season but some people on here really need to check themselves with the abuse they are dishing put to Poch. Today he fucked up but the deeper issue is our squad. There was nothing on our bench today to mix things up. They had Lacazette and Ramsey, we had Moura. Are these journos not allowed to ask the only meaningful question that everyone wants to know the answer to? Why would any sensible coach leave out one of the worlds best defenders , our best player this season by a mile, a player who tweeted this week that he was really up for this game and put in a young lad who has given away two penalties against Wolves then should have had another given against him against Chelsea alongside Vertonghen who is trying to get back to match fitness after two months and played in the midweek match against Inter? I am totally baffled by that decision and there is no doubt it handed the match to the Arse as our back four was all over the place with substandard fullbacks either side and a carthorse in Dier in front and Sissoko who started to revert to type. Absolutely shocking team selection and in-game management. Pooch has never given me the impression that he has a clue about the significance of this fixture to the bragging rights of the fans involved. If he did he would make sure that above all other games he fielded the very best eleven he could. A win against the Arse would have been a massive booster to the side on the back of the Chelsea and Inter results. It would have been a massive knockback for the Arse. Instead, Pooch has handed back momentum to the Arse to push on and grab fourth place from us just as we enter a crucial and busy period that may define our season. Why does the new Arsenal manager appear to recognise the significance of this result for the club and fans, hence the reason why he made halftime subs to change the game whilst Pooch does nothing until we have shipped two goals and the game is lost?

The shoe horning of Sanchez & Foyth into the side is preparation for squeezing out Toby and covering Jan as age or Contract runs down.
It’s instead of as HH says giving the duo a golden handcuff to finish up with us instead the method is to squeeze 1 out and run 1 down.
Never mind that it’s cutting 1s nose off to spite face.

Is it me or does his words and team selection seem a bit like he is trying to send a message “they were able to bring on a 2nd striker… and Ramsey” “we were struggling with energy…” then picking Foyth and Jan instead of one of them with toby seems like trying to make the point that we don’t have defensive options if he leaves. I don’t believe poch is inept enough for benching toby as a football tactic or rest (As two far easier games coming).

Well that was a clusterfcuk. How was Emery able to gee his team up to a committed performance like that? From the moment our team was announced the players must have wondered what Poch’s game was.
You do not drop your best central defender and play a rookie in such an important match and the selection seemed to affect the performance of all our players. You should not need to be motivated to play at the top of your game against the Arse. And as captain it was Hugo’s job to make sure the players up for this match.
Aside from the game against the chavs and grinding out the necessary victory against Inter, our performances have been below average this season especially. We’ve won ugly and this has glossed over the deficiencies in the squad. It became obvious particularly in the second half we needed Toby’s leadership, organisational skills and experience,so why didn’t Poch bring him on?Why didn’t Danny start?
Presumably Jan is suspended for the game against Saints on Wednesday, will Dier drop back to partner Foyth, because he has dropped his standards alarmingly this season.Aurier,Sissoko,Davies all reverting to type, our summer of not buying one player is bringing into sharp focus our limited squad.
Poch’s presser after the game was bewildering,it was like he has no answer for why he couldn’t make a substitution until so late in the game,in any game.It will be interesting to see the side he puts out in the cup against the Arse.I think he realises he has gone as far as he can without further investment by owners and chairman who won’t invest money.End of the season Moaninho out Poch to OT.

Lloris: Ah grand.

Aurier: School bully, always hated facing his mother upon returning home each day.

Foyth: Them bones need calcium. I hope his childish gusto turns into fearlessness.

Jan: I remember his pregnant childhood sweetheart telling me how he turned and flied with the idea of a spontaneous responsibility. Never wraps his gifts for his Nan. It’s tough wrapping key-rings made out of empty silent restaurant talk though.

Ben: Like Cafu with a brain of Gary Doherty. Possibly needs some hair dye or a Danny Rose volley to get his family talking about him again.

Dier: I wish that ferocious passion in his eyeballs reflected a Roy Keane behind them. Pretty sure I could beat him in a game of “Let’s see how long we can hang off this motorway bridge using the gum we’ve been chewing” game which he just decided on whilst we wade through the fields cow tipping.

Sissoko: I don’t do parades.

Eriksen: Played like a hotdog stand with watered down ketchup. The meat wasn’t bad but the bun was stale and yer man’s hands were covered in blisters when he sold it to me. He’s the Michelin chef pumping out hotdogs all night coz his lady prefers the extra apace in bed. Poor man – huffing and puffing like a gypsy with a mortgage

Alli: Take of this what you will, but I cherish a friend in terms of values, principles, honesty and a good heart. I would go to war with these people.
I wouldn’t even go to an all inclusive tropical, meditative, strip club with this man. After the Chelsea game I thought he remembered the value of being humble. He owes the strip club pole a wipe down.

Son: I hope you remain a happy individual. I like how likeable you are. And rightly so! You’re also not used to having too much time on the ball. No better man to place that shot outside the box to. What a chance!

Harry: You to take a moment, or a day, or a fleeting afternoon. Go somewhere nice, rent a boat and mosey from the sea harbour on a calm day.
Get all the way out that you can only see a wee bit of land anywhere you can look.
Be totally isolated, just yourself. Drop you anchor, stare at the winter sky.
Roll over and into the cold sea.
Close your eyes.
Listen to nothing.
Just chill for a few moments and remember how lucky and talented you are.
This world owes you nothing. You deserve a moment. Be proud of yourself. Launch yourself back into that boat. Sail back to shore with the wind behind new and remind yourself you own these punks and add spine to your monster. Then have a nap coz you need it son x

I agree on Sissy, he still runs a lot with very little product. Yet now its accepted as a grand step rather than what it is – a severe lack of anything better in the middle. I also agree with the substation bit, perhaps if Poch rotated earlier in a game we would be harder to read and easier to rest players.

This is he first time I’ve been properly annoyed with Poch, he sometimes has too much belief in his methods and seems to be in denial when he messes up.

It’s almost as if he approaches the whole thing as a development coach rather than a manager with the priority on winning matches being secondary.

This was a bad game to lose for several reasons;

Sorry everyone, as much as I love poch he’s gotta take the shit here. I don’t know what the issue is with Toby, but let’s make this very clear, when them 2, him and Jan, play spurs are a better side. And anyone that thinks getting rid of walker was good business, please fuck off. Without a doubt them 2 black Shakespeare and trippier etweeen them ain fit to tie the boys boots. We have a keeper who’s prone to doing impressions of falli g out a wheelchair, never seen a more pathetic consistent attempt at saving a pen. All in all that’s 2 years running we go over there and totally cave in. Take the credit last week must take the shit this, all of them. Pathetic

Can’t argue with you there. “The NLD is not a plaything or an opportunity to blood youngsters”
Unless it’s Danny Rose, with that unforgettable volley. I was watching that when it happened, but re-watching the footage, BAE was on the pitch, ‘Arry must have brought Danny on as a winger.

Both Foyth and Aurier were the weak spot, all their attacks were down that left channel and it was deliberate. Play Toby and it’s a very different scenario though.

Aurier is inconsistent at best and an accident waiting to happen more often French than not…
