“Playing the ultimate game” – Journalist thinks Daniel Levy could be playing a masterstroke to sign top transfer target

Tottenham are monitoring the situation as Conor Gallagher’s transfer to Atletico Madrid faces potential setbacks.

And while supposedly Tottenham’s chances of signing Gallagher were deemed over once he agreed a deal with Atletico, journalist James Olley believes Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may be strategically positioning the club to sign the player at a more affordable price as the transfer window nears its end.

Gallagher finds himself in the final year of his contract with Chelsea, which means he could potentially leave for free next summer.

This scenario could push Chelsea to become more amenable to negotiations, creating an opening for Tottenham to make a strategic offer.

Spurs’ interest in Gallagher dates back to last year, and he is reportedly highly regarded by manager Ange Postecoglou.

Although the Lilywhites have not yet placed a formal bid, this might be part of a deliberate strategy to wait for a more advantageous moment to strike a deal.

Olley suggests that Levy is likely using a calculated approach, poised to make a move that would allow Tottenham to secure Gallagher for a bargain price, who has a market value of €50 million.

This would be very typical of Levy who has a reputation for making savvy, well-timed deals.

The pundit told ESPN:

“The Conor Gallagher thing is interesting, they have been linked and they have been looking at him for a long time.

“Every time a club has gone in, Aston Villa have gone in and Atletico Madrid are in now, Tottenham haven’t tried to seriously them.

“Whether Daniel Levy is playing the ultimate game of brinkmanship here and waiting for it to really go down to the wire to get him for a cut price, that could be a masterstroke, I’d say it’s odds against at the moment, but with Daniel Levy you can never rule anything out.”

As the transfer window deadline looms, Spurs supporters are hopeful that the club will seize this opportunity to boost their midfield options by adding Gallagher to the squad.

Despite the complexities involved, Olley points out that Levy’s expertise in deal-making means Tottenham’s interest in Gallagher remains a significant possibility.
