“You can’t do that”, “absolutely sleeping” – Paul Scholes slams Tottenham star for his poor defending vs Brighton

Tottenham suffered a 3-2 defeat to Brighton yesterday, ending their 5-game winning streak.

Spurs dominated the first half and took a deserving two goal lead thanks to goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison.

However, the Seagulls came out in the second half a completely different team and scored three goals in 20 minutes to completely turn the game around.

Minteh pulled one back in the 48th minute before Rutter scored the equaliser 10 minutes later.

In the 66th minute, former Arsenal man Danny Welbeck scored a free header past the keeper to give Brighton the lead.

It was a shocking defeat for Ange and his face at full time said it all.

Paul Scholes, discussing the game on the Premier League Productions, singled out two players for their role in Brighton’s winning goal.

He criticised Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero’s defending and slammed the Argentine for ball watching.

He said:

“It was a great goal and a brilliant tackle, more than anything (from Rutter). Again, Udogie’s a little bit weak in his defensive display. I think Bentancur also tries to actually see the ball out.”

“A great retrieving tackle from Rutter. You have to say that it’s a little lucky that it falls to Danny Welbeck.”

“But watch Romero, absolutely sleeping, he actually thinks that Bentancur is in control of it. You can’t do that. You have to anticipate that your forward, the man you are marking, it might come to him. You stay with him. But he is just absolutely ball-watching, Danny steps in front, uses his experience and finishes it well.”

With the international break coming up, Tottenham will have time to reflect and refocus as they aim to bounce back with a win.
