Paul Merson slams 28-yr-old linked with Spurs after World Cup showing

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the England international goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in recent months.

Hugo Lloris has not been at his best this season, and the Frenchman has been criticised for his error-prone displays. Furthermore, he is in his twilight years and Antonio Conte will have to find a long-term replacement for the World Cup winner soon.

Pickford has been identified as a potential target as per recent reports from 90min.

Former Premier League player and popular pundit Paul Merson is baffled by the 28-year-old goalkeeper’s performance for his country recently.

Merson has now criticised the England international goalkeeper for his performance against France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

The defending champions managed to beat the Three Lions 2-1 to book their place in the semifinals and Merson believes that Pickford should have stopped the opening goal of the game from Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Real Madrid midfielder managed to find the back of the net from the long range and Merson has questioned Pickford’s positioning for the goal. He believes that the England goalkeeper could have easily prevented the goal if he had been on the line.

“I don’t know a goalkeeper who doesn’t save France’s first goal,” said Merson to Sky Sports. “Why Jordan Pickford was on his goal line when the ball was 25, 30 yards out I do not know.

“If Pickford was on the edge of his six-yard box, he probably catches Aurelien Tchouameni’s shot.”

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham decide to pursue Pickford in the coming months.

Finding a quality alternative to Lloris will have to be one of their priorities in the upcoming windows and Pickford might not be such a bad addition. He is well-settled in the Premier League and the 28-year-old has been a key player for Everton over the years.
