Opinion: Winks Needs To Adapt To Survive At Spurs

Harry Winks’ struggle to truly breakthrough at Tottenham began some time before José Mourinho was appointed as Tottenham coach.

Under Mauricio Pochettino an uncomfortable combination of injury and perhaps tactical confusion did nothing to cement the now 23-year-old’s place in Spurs starting XI.

Now, Charlie Eccleshare for The Athletic suggests that the Englishman could be reviewing his situation.

Scrutinizing every ball the boy has kicked in the sporadic appearances Winks has made over the last few seasons is unlikely to provide us with the whole picture. Winks isn’t a bad player, by any estimation.

Arguably, Harry’s biggest problem is fitting into the somewhat chaotic jigsaw puzzle that has become Spurs’ current squad. Where exactly, is Winks’ preferred position? And then one must factor in his teammates.

It looks (from the outside, at least) easier to fashion an effective midfield without him. The Sissoko/Winks axis has failed to impress. With the arrival of Lo Celso, the landscape looks even more crowded.

The truth may well be that Winks needs to adapt in order to survive in N17. It feels ambitious to believe Mourinho or anyone else for that matter is likely to build a side around him.
