Opinion: One Spurs player singled out for his performance vs Sporting but what about the rest? – Time for Conte to be ‘ruthless’

Hunter Godson, Brand Editor of The Players’ Tribune, took to Twitter to criticise Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier after he was outplayed by Marcus Edwards on Tuesday night.

Tottenham were defeated 2-0 in Portugal by two late goals, and Edwards who left Spurs for the Portuguese club stood out for his excellent performance, which included a stunning run that nearly ended up in a goal.

During the first half, Edwards easily dribbled past Dier before taking on a number of his teammates and forcing Hugo Lloris into a save. Godson slammed Dier after the incident, mockingly tweeting that Edwards had ‘sent him back to Portugal.’

Besides being embarrassed by Edwards in the first half, Dier lost possession 7 times and gave away foul twice. But to be fair, he was not the only player who had a mare. Emerson Royal had a horrid game as well as he lost possession 10 times and was pretty easily dribbled past before Sporting scored their second.

And can we talk about Son? Is he the same player that won the golden boot last season? He looks far off it and it is a complete mystery. Some reports suggest Son hasn’t taken the signing of Richarlison well which has effected his performance and if so then that shows just how weak his mentality is.

There is a growing concern amongst the football experts and journalists regarding Conte’s persistent nod for Son who has not had a single good game this season. Tottenham legend and former boss Glenn Hoddle and MailOnline journalist Oli Gamp are just a few of those who have raised questions regarding the Italian’s decision.

It’s perhaps time for Conte to courage up and make the decision to drop Son for the inform Kulusevski who has been rather undeservingly benched. It would be a ruthless decision, but if it pays off, it will only make Tottenham’s bench stronger and more dangerous.
