Opinion: Jose’s Chelsea Legacy Destroyed By Spurs Move: Former Fan Angst Is Real

By The Boy -

I reached out to Simon Phillips founder of TalkChelsea earlier today, to get his take on the appointment of Jose Mourinho at Spurs.

After all, it’s not every day that your one time footballing hero signs for a huge rival. Sure, Jose has since been at Manchester United, but London sides have a much tighter rivalry.

So what’s the reaction in SW5, to the man to that somewhat embodied the revival of Chelsea’s fortunes in the Premier League era?

“Jose will always have my respect, but as any Chelsea supporter knows, the difference between going to United and going to Spurs is massive.

You can just imagine the excitement in his mind when he saw a chance approaching at Spurs, a chance to take the limelight, a chance to thrive and be the one that everybody is talking about once again – this is what he lives for.

Do I hate the man? No. I couldn’t hate him due to what he did at Chelsea. I will never forget those great times.

But as for him having a Chelsea legacy, that has sailed away the minute he even thought about being manager of Tottenham.”

It’s difficult to argue against any of this, switching roles across a capital city is a big deal.

However, this is an outlook heavily fixated with what might be going on inside Mourinho’s head.

The bigger picture here is that the project under Pochettino didn’t quite work. Lots of oohs and aahs as Spurs flirted with success, but the Argentine ultimately failed to deliver.

What Daniel Levy has hopefully done is to not just try a different voice in on the training pitches and inside the dressing room, but to harness the “I’ll show you!” element that’s so clearly still burning in the man.

As per the Souness comments yesterday, Jose comes across as The Angry One, and as a Spurs fan, a bit of genuine bite would be welcomed.

Sometimes it feels like we’re living in a parallel universe, the universe of “If”. If Poch, had that Leicester team, he would have won the league, If Poch had that Liverpool team, he would have won the Champions League, If, If, If…. Poch achieved top 4, champions league qualification consistently, that’s the bar, that’s the goal for THFC for the immediate future. Whenever/If he wins a trophy in the future, he will elevate his CV from won nothing to trophy winner, and then we’ll see if he will become a serial winner. And if in the future our record against top six sides and bottom six sides improves, that will count for me as us being serial winners.

They’d all love poch. Couldn’t see poch going to arsenal. Chelsea? Maybe. Would it bother me? Nope.

Yes, the whole ‘Jose winner, Poch never won nothing ‘ is really meaningless. If Poch had that Chelsea team, that Madrid team, That Inter team he would be a serial winner. The players definitely knew way before yesterday, Ben Davies was transparent as anything and when I mentioned that to a mate he said he thought exactly the same of Toby’s interview. They knew. It’s been orchestrated more for the show than anything else. The show will be massively anticipated now and I wouldn’t be shocked to see the team performing splendidly all of a sudden.

Who cares what could’ve been with poch? Just like what it could’ve been with arry and the rest of them. Not me. I care about now and the future. The past is where it is.

I agree – I doubt we would have wondered into 14th come the end of the season, and lets face it, talk is the Jose negotiation went on for 3weeks…so add that to the hunt and rumoured attempt to get Rodgers you have to ask how long Poch knew that he wouldn’t see out the year. So I wonder what a Poch that felt truly backed and actually backed could have done. Its one thing pointing out he won nothing, but it was very clear to all his target from his boss was top 4 and CL football, above all else, so with limited resources and a very physical game, he did what he could. I personally think Poch could have done great things, but he is gone, and I am sure Jose will do things that are great or at least he claims they are. He will likely be told he can priorities what he wants, he will win a trophy or 2 in 3 years and then blame the “constraints” at the club for failures to do more.

Jose knows he’s onto a banker. The likelyhood is even if Poch had not gone the team wouldn’t finish 14th. It’s a win win on double the wages and all for the cameras. ENIC fc AKA celebrity big brother. THFC gone.
