Opinion: Danny Rose’s Latest Outpouring Paints Him As A Tortured Soul

Danny Rose would appear to be one of the unique individuals blessed with no sense of irony and no filter. This blog, quite understandably, has covered Danny’s forthright interviews with the press as a matter of course. What Tottenham players think and feel can often be as important to fans as what they do on the pitch.

In Rose’s case, it frequently felt as if one were not so much hearing what he thought, but what he wanted to tell the club. Which always struck me as a little peculiar given the supposedly close relationship the left back had with Mauricio Pochettino, which resulted in some Spurs players jokingly referring to him as the gaffer’s son.

In this latest outpouring from Rose, this time to the BBC, makes for particularly predictable reading.

From the headline and quotes contained within, it might appear that Mourinho did what most managers do, and made an appraisal of his new squad and decided that Rose wasn’t up to scratch.

“I do feel I wasn’t given as much of a chance as everybody else in the backline,” the left-back told BBC Radio 5 Live. I did want to play for him.”

Mourinho was appointed on the 20th of November, and by the 13th of December, Rose issued a blunt take on the new boss.

“I’ve never had a conversation with him and I don’t see why I need to. As I said before, I’m here for the next 18 months, so I don’t see why I need to have a conversation with the manager.”

Further scrutiny of Rose’s various interviews over the last few seasons is unlikely to shed light upon anything of great value; the general message is crystal clear, that the now 29-year-old (for whatever reasons) became deeply unhappy at Tottenham.

I’m not sure if Rose will ever find peace if he continues to mull over the past.
