Opinion – Any attempt at punishing Tottenham is doomed to failure

By Bruce Grove -

There has been some serious hysteria over the failed European Super League project and it is likely to continue for a little while longer.

Among the hysterical howling by the media and some sections of the footballing authorities is the call for Tottenham and the other big six teams to be punished.

Well, if that was to be attempted it would not just be the big six that failed to read the room.

If there is one person that is never afraid to litigate, it is Daniel Levy, he is not a man that rolls over easily.

It is very noticeable that he has not apologised for his part in the failed plot and he is unlikely to do so, he really does not care one iota what anyone thinks of him and issuing grovelling apologies is not in his make up.

Levy was forever in and out of court over the new Tottenham stadium (Guardian), as well as the battle for the London Stadium (Telegraph) and he is never afraid to make unpopular decisions in the interests of Spurs, even if they are misguided.

A case in point is when he decided to furlough staff in the middle of the pandemic last year and has no qualms at taking a huge salary, almost at the same time (TalkSport).

It is therefore almost certain that any attempt at punishing Spurs with points or a fine will be met with fierce opposition from the Tottenham chairman.

He is also likely to be joined in that arena by Man City who just love to spend their money on lawyers fighting their corner.

There are of course subtle methods that can be used, for example, denying Tottenham hosting rights for major competitions and there is not much Levy can do about that but that is probably as far as the authorities can go, be it UEFA, the Premier League or FIFA.

No club, Arsenal included has paid any penalty or fine. All the clubs took an £8m equity stake to progress the ESL, i.e. £48m from the UK alone.

What isn’t known is how much is left, any entitlement to repayment of any monies in credit or if these are forfeited. Furthermore, details of the contracts are not in the public domain and it is therefore impossible to assess any liabilities at this stage.

Any speculation as to the contract and how watertight it is or was is just that – speculation. Let’s take a breather and let the drama unfold.

They are the present not the future especially as a massive shake up /overhaul of the team is immediately required!!

They are the ones most likely to fold due to the amount of debt, desperate times mean desperate measures.

The accounts referred to showing Levy’s salary are pre-covid salary / accounts.
I would be surprised if Levy does not care what people think of him, but I am equally sure that comes second to what he deems to be in the best interests of the future of the club.

That was dispicable, and not the only place that “caught fire” round there either. Scumbags.

In short, he’s a %@#@. They’re their own punishment at this stage. Watching another Redknapp interview and again, as soon as Levys name is brought up he jumps to it, saying he never had a problem blah blah, he’s always so defensive when someone brings it up, like he can’t wait to shut down any rumour of dissent or difficulty. It’s almost like he was made to sign something when he left to not speak negatively about Levy and ENIC in the media or at interviews . Hmmmmmm, I wonder.

I find it strange that everyone says that the whole thing has collapsed and Real Madrid and Barcelona are still in.

I remember the Archway saga well. Just a little business standing in the way of a steamroller which accidentally burnt down.
As for London Stadium – that went well didnt it.
So bring it on if we all signed a contract then the lawyers are going to have a field day

One way to punish Levy would be to force him to sign more decent players.

Well Arsenal have had to pay an £8 million penalty for withdrawal from the Super League and that figure could grow. So Spurs will be fined as well.

Two people can play at suing. Levy just broke a water tight contract to join the Super League and he risks being sued by other investors in the scheme.

Real Madrid haven’t left the ESL, so it’s possible they could sue all the clubs who left. A field day for lawyers and either way it will cost Spurs money.

He doesn’t care what people think. I disagree, he caved in spectacularly on the furlough and he’s just done the same with the Super League.
