One New Name Appears In The ‘Next Spurs Boss’ Debate But Can These Fans Be Serious?

As we’ve discussed at some length before today, the negative speculation surrounding José Mourinho began almost before he was hired as the Tottenham coach. The ‘I didn’t want him here in the first place’ brigade was rumbling healthily along when things were going well. It was therefore those voices against the Portuguese were only going to become louder when things took a turn for the worse.

The names of some prospective replacements have been bandied about, but beneath the desire to replace José there lurks the cold reality of whoever came in would be facing the same personnel, with the same limitations. Once we cut through the false equivalence of characters like Jamie Redknapp, any Spurs manager would be looking at just one or two elite players, a few excellent ones, and many more that have limited appeal. So limited that they would not ‘walk into another top-flight sides’ starting XI.

Would the soon-to-be relegated Scott Parker be able to get a better tune out of this mob, than Mourinho? These fans think so. What do you believe?

Zero backing at the new lane? I don’t think so. You lot are stuck in the past

Money wasn’t “tight though. Daniel would’ve told him there would be money to spend. Tottenham was earning dough

Nonsense. He had offers from China and America (more money) not many European clubs can afford him. Benfica wanted him. Couldn’t afford him though

White elephant? “Means nothing in football terms? Are players free now then?

What really grinds my gears about the Levy era is the profound statements he makes about how to run a successful football club. Well all this from a man who is the least successful, trophy wise, chairman in the clubs history.
We won’t do a Leeds
600 million in debt Daniel we have
Spending money doesn’t necessarily buy success
Look at the top clubs and home and in Europe and they have all invested big time in recruitment. In contrast not spending money means standing still or going backwards
The current spending is not sustainable
Well up to Covid clubs continued to spend ever larger sums of money. Again another Levy quote to justify parsimony
The transfer market only opens up at the end of the window
Absolute rubbish. No club is going to sell its best assets so close to the end of the window because they can’t replace them. What you get at the end of the window are everyone’s cast offs.
Its quite amazing how little criticism he attracts from both the media and the fan base

This might be left field but I’d give the Barnsley manager Ismael ago…he’s worked wonders there.

Don’t think it matters who takes the job tbh, the result will always be the same under the smothering grip of Levy and enic. We’ve had some great managers under these owners and they’ve all gone to waste. Same old same old. They arrive with a fanfare and we all think “this is the one who is going to take us to the next level”. Some do, like Poch who was an excellent choice. But then Levy just can’t bring himself to support the manager, even those who have proven that they have the Midas touch. So we end up with the situation of a CL final and four top 4 finishes not being enough to see that manager supported in the transfer market!
Truth is you don’t become a European Giant club by spending the barest minimum possible on players, by having just one dedicated striker on the books for several seasons, despite allegedly going for the title and playing in Europe. It’s actually laughable how Levy has got away with it over the last few years and it’s also laughable how many gullible Sours fans have supported him.
The stadium might be wonderful but it’s a great big white elephant in reality. It mean nothing in footballing terms, it doesn’t point to a successful club either. What is does do is make the owners one hell of a lot of money (under normal circumstances). Will they reinvest that into the team? Well that remains to be seen, but judging by past history and Levy’s inflexible and penny pinching character, it seems unlikely to me.
I hope I’m wrong.

Scott Parker, Joachim Anderson and Harrison Reed can make Spurs Great Again

I saw some other genius on Twitter suggesting Jesse March from Salzburg. He would have have us playing with style and Spurs would be a hipster club again. The mind boggles

He’s seriously rich, there’s plenty of alternative football work available for which he would have been in high demand and I suspect would have paid well but not 15million well. I think it’s fair to say he was not inundated with management offers so maybe he took the first available, and well paid offer.

How do young managers get a chance with bigger teams in England? The latest trend is you have to have a connection with the club, like Frank Lampard, Ole GS and Arteta (as if it will have any impact), but surely you have to show a modicum of competence, but how much is enough? Jose has more than enough but is having a stinker! Would Chelsea have taken on Arteta and would Lampard have got the Arsenal job?

If Parker hadn’t made numerous crop circles for us at WHL would we even consider him? I like how Fulham play and he did well to get promotion, but is the step up too big to manage Spurs, and I know full well we don’t win things like Chelsea? Maybe we just need to lower our expectations. Our recent success has been top 4 and for whatever reason (Levy, Levy, Levy) we didn’t push on. Why we couldn’t have got another Poch type manager has puzzled me. Did Levy actually believe he was giving Jose a ‘winning’ squad? Lots of us weren’t convinced but what do we know hey! In the 80s I expected to compete for trophies, not any more. My expectations are not as high as other Spurs fans, but I look at one Rumbleows Cup in 20 years and follow my instincts.

In Germany and Italy the managership merry-go-round seems to reward the manager for doing something worthwhile. Will Chris Wilder be given a chance at a big club after an amazing job at Sheff Utd? He definitely is more deserving of the Spurs and Arsenal jobs than Parker and Arteta.

Managers last on average 18 months, but a club needs a structure that enables minimal disruption when change happens. Watford, Norwich and Swansea are exponents of this, Chelsea too. What we seemed to do was change this when moving from Poch to Jose. Utd did it and have struggled getting some sort of structure back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, whether Parker would or wouldn’t be a disaster can only be guessed, but would he have done better job than Jose? I think we would have played a more pleasing on the eye style, but results wouldn’t have changed much.

Fair enough. Dangle another carrot in front of the fanbase, giving us just enough to start hoping again before the usual “going up in flames” part due to zero backing. The Levy way.

I can’t for the life of me understand why Jose took the Spurs job. He’s a seriously wealthy individual so money can’t be the prime motivation and it would appear other jobs in management weren’t forthcoming.
However he can’t have been unaware of how difficult it is working with Daniel Levy given how many other managers have exited under his stewardship.
Levy would clearly have told him that money was tight, due to the stadium, and that probably for the first time since Porto he would have to work with limited funds. It is possible that he agreed with Levy that the squad didn’t need overhauling despite what the previous incumbent suggested.
Whilst this seasons dye is not yet cast it does seem that in truth the club is not moving forward. Whatever personnel changes he has been able to make, five of last week starters didn’t play for Poch haven’t improved the side and the team only got a point at Newcastle due to the efforts of Harry.Without him I shudder to think where we would finish but it’s increasingly likely we may get to find out quite soon.
Its increasingly likely that Jose will not see out the four year contract quite possibly by his own decision or that Daniel will have determined that he ‘failed’ like all the previous incumbents in his 20 year of glory.

Some members of the playing staff need shifting first. They know who they are.

Scott Parkers name has been banded about for a while now….what better way to destroy a young managers spirit and reputation than to come and work for Levys investment scheme?? Bonza!
If he tows the PR line he could be perfect….

Cheap option, pay out Jose but Parker’s terms will compensate over the next 12 months compared to keeping Jose around. I can see it, I don’t think it would work out though…

-young
-promising
-hasn’t won a thing
-would come with a new project that would take at least a year or two to get going

Well Scotty ticks a few boxes alright. I like him and he’s making a very average Fulham look competitive, but it seems they are also losing quite a few games where the balance is even (like Villa 2-1 or Wolves yesterday).

No reason to think there would be any improvement with him and the same players apart from the “new manager bounce”. A lateral move, while we need new players to actually move forward.
