Tottenham left wing-back Sergio Reguilón has been ‘one of the great disappointments’ in the current 2022/2023 season for Atlético de Madrid, according to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo.
The Madrid native was loaned out from Tottenham for the season but has struggled to make an impact on the field.
His move was hampered by a groin injury in the beginning and then a red card in a match against UD Almería resulted in a loss of trust of Diego Simeone who downgraded Reguilón to the bench as per the report.
It further states that the club getting knocked out from all competitions except La Liga has further limited Reguilón’s role in the team.
Simeone has opted to not rotate and fully trust Reinildo Mandava instead. This has left Reguilón’s season at Atlético de Madrid as ‘one to forget’.
It’s suggested that Reguilón will have to ‘rethink his future’ once he ‘returns to London’, since he is not part of Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham, where he has a contract until June 30, 2025.
Since leaving Sevilla FC, where he won the UEFA Europa League and had a solid season with three goals and five assists, the Spanish full-back has struggled to rediscover his best form.
Sergio Reguilon made 31 appearances for Spurs last season in a campaign interrupted by injuries. His position came under threat towards the end of the season by Ryan Sessegnon who enjoyed an excellent stint down the left in his absence. And after Conte signed Ivan Perisic in the summer, he was loaned out to the La Liga club.
