Official Tottenham starting XI v Man City – Kane does not start

By Bruce Grove -

It is finally here, the opening game of the season and best of all, the fans are back as well.

The big question everyone wanted an answer to before kick-off was whether Harry Kane would start, well, now we know, he is not.

With or without Kane this was always going to be one of the toughest fixtures of the season for Spurs and to some extent, it is good that we are getting it out of the way early on.

No one knows exactly how each team will start their respective seasons and so if you were ever going to catch City at the right time, it is the opening game of the season in front of your own fans.

It also helps that City are also without some key players including Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden, though they are hardly short of quality replacements.

Anyway, this is the Tottenham lineup to face City this afternoon, what do you think of the starting X1.

I remember when Liam was at a Spurs-City game over decade ago. He kept coming out the exec box onto the balcony giving it large. All the spurs fans sang ” you’re just a shit Chas’n’Dave”. It was great. Spurs won 2-1, we gave him so much stick.

BBC made me laugh today, “after this game you can see how desperate they are for a striker”. What complete garbage…my heart bleeds for them it really does. 🤔

The guy had a season ticket at Arsenal when he’s a Citeh fan!? Yes, weird.

I bet he’s in a great mood tonight after this weekend “feelin’ supersonic” mate! 😂

I think we can count our lucky stars that De Bruyne did’nt start and play a full game. When he did come on it was a nervous time for all as we know how dangerous he can be. Then again we need that luck….Also thought the ref Anthony Taylor had a great game.

Are you crazy 😂…That performance today was all Levy needed as an excuse to say ‘Why do we need to spend money if we have a team that beat last season’s League winnwers”…😂😂. That’s it Transfer window has closed early for Spurs.

I’d stop a bit short of “lethal”, as there were numerous chances and we took only one – if we were a bit more on it, this could have been over sooner.

Still, it’s a win against Pep, so no complaints.

Yup, and with a counterattacking win against the 20 points ahead eventual league winners. We are Spurs however so lets enjoy each positive when we get ’em and while we can.

Ironic isn’t it, Kane’s departure might indeed set our forward players free in some respects. I remember getting that impression when Kane was injured for a while and we looked far more fluid up front and still scored goals. Still prefer him on our side though.

It’s clearly far too early to make proper judgements but when I see the ‘usual suspects’ playing with assurednesss against such quality opposition it makes me question the managerial nous of The Specious One even more so.

Ok well, I called that wrong after the first 15 mins. Could the commitment until the end be because of fitness levels being higher? No doubt the crowd lifted the players and even Kane must have been impressed with the atmosphere and the way the team fought. However, perhaps also the team played too much around Kane and now they are playing more open with Moura and Bergwijn both running with pace through the middle. Even Dele was getting stuck and looks, fitter. We still need quality additions and its far to early to get to optimistic but that was a result that all the fans and the players needed to bring some good news home at last.

Lucas played like a man on a mission today. Tanganga was incredible. There was a lot of togetherness and determination in that performance, which is a massive improvement in itself. Even my favourites Dier and Sanchez played well after a poor start.

Was worried Bergy’s miss would cost us, but luckily, it didn’t. Sort out your finishing and you’re golden!

My only caveat is that we’ve had performances like this early last season too – defensive grit, less possession and counters. Will we do this against lesser teams as well or will the “shackles go off”? We’ll see, but this was very promising.

The restorative powers of Jose leaving the building? They look sharper, fitter and more like a team today.

This group didn’t respond well to being told to step it up as individuals or being dug out as individuals. The collective approach suits them, which is why it was such a poor appointment in the first place…

I don’t think he can sub Dele for Lo Celso. The role Dele is playing, you need a right footed player. If we play this 4-3-3 all season, I don’t see where Lo Celso fits. Gil on the left would be a great sub right now.
