Null & Voiding The Season Is Surely The Only Sensible Solution [opinion]

Speculation over the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on live sport has understandably been running rife, with Tottenham Hotspur being as involved as any other organization.

Amongst the many splendid live events that our current owners had scheduled for the summer – beyond the football matches – were live concerts and a world-class boxing match between Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev. That fight, along with all the other events looks doomed to now be scrapped.

Many have chipped in their two cents worth in respect of how English football should proceed, and I can only agree with the respected sports lawyer Richard Cramer – who says that ultimately the season will have to be declared null and void.

This will, of course, provoke temper tantrums from those most savagely affected by the injustice of it all, but that as they say is show business.

Liverpool Football Club might be particularly appalled by such a decision, given their current grip on the Premier League title. And they are unlikely to be a lone voice. However, Liverpool’s specific association with tragedy really ought to provide both it and it’s supporters with a head-start when it comes to retaining a sense of decorum in the midst of crisis.

The repercussions of this pandemic will absolutely not be wrapped up in a few weeks, and the sooner folks embrace that reality, the better.

What seems remarkably daft, is to concoct some “Pools Panel” end to the various divisions’ proceedings.

Barry Hearn is spot on here, this is on a par with a world war in terms of disruption, and so the precedent is to call a halt to all the divisions, and begin again when the COVID-19 fog has cleared.
