“Not a legend but a class player” These Tottenham fans disagree with their club over former star

By Bruce Grove -

Toby Alderweireld returned to Tottenham ahead of their match against Vitesse in London to say goodbye to the fans.

The club had sold him to Al-Duhail earlier this year, and there hadn’t been a good time for him to say his goodbyes until that day.

The Lilywhites posted the video of the defender on their Twitter account yesterday and captioned it:

“Legend status.

“You’ll always be welcome at Tottenham Hotspur, @AlderweireldTob!”

Most of the fans had a problem with the Belgian being called a legend, and they corrected the club about it in the comments.

Here are some of the best reactions:

The Boy Hotspur Says

The word legend has truly been thrown around too easily nowadays and it is commendable that some fans still understand it takes a lot more to be a legend at Tottenham.

Alderweireld was a part of a Tottenham squad that impressed at the club and nearly won the Champions League in 2019.

If they had succeeded, he would probably have attained legendary status.

Since that never happened, he is simply one of the finest players we have had in the last decade.

It was a very good team and I believe they should have won stuff.. I blame managerial decisions and individual players who didn’t step up to the occasions like Kane Tintin and Dele. Big match players and winners do… Our owners have never thrown money at the club like City and Chelsea. So Jan and Toby should have signed for them you’re saying. To create revenue to spend we needed the stadium, because of ffp rules….. No churn or signings for nearly 2 years was shocking and wrong.. But everyone seems to forget the seasons and years before when Botchy was repeatedly asked if he needed another striker to back up Kane, and if he needed more players. He kept answering No, that Son and Lucas can play there (they can’t). And he kept telling everyone how he liked a small squad, and he was berry appy.

Teams win stuff not individuals. Those legends you mention played in great teams. Both Toby and Jan should have been in a team at a club where the owners invested in the squad for success. That was never the case for either of them when they were here.

Not skimming over anything. Do you think Dembele should have played in the league cup final? Do you think we should have sold him when we were so weak in the middle without him? We needed him still… Drogba was a big match player he was a prime example…. Jimmy Greaves of course is a legend.. He turned up when he was needed.. Scoring in fa cup and European cup finals… Kane has had multiple chances but he has gone missing, fluffed his lines, and been bullied. A strikers job is to score goals.. Greavsie was a winner, a big match player, a true legend… Kane isn’t.. Yet…. The game is about winning at the end of the day… Kanes had his chances to win with us, it’s easy to cry Levy Levy Levy, but I’m talking about Kanes performances in finals…. Winners don’t come with excuses… Strawman arguments… Weak mentality…

People don’t like the truth do they ☝… But nobody can actually argue with the clear and obvious facts.. Lol

Conveniently skimming over the issues regarding Dembele not playing and to compare the squad Drogba played in versus the bare XI that Spur had to compete on the day everyone was fit. Bending the truth to fit a narrative. I think Harry is a legend. Levy has stopped him being a Greavsie for me.

agree with that post. Southgate is an abysmal attacking tactician, despite the players at his disposal. Kane has carried Spurs into all of the big games they have been in. Levy chronic underinvestment in a playing squad has seen us look knackered and falter at the end too often for it to be bottle or coincidence. Look at Lukaku – a better player than a peak Kane or in a better position to win stuff in his last two clubs?

We had 16 attempt on Liverpools goal, they had 14 on ours.. We had 8 shots on target, they only had 3 on target…. I thought it was the most boring final ever and the scouse were definitely there for the taking.

Capello.. Lol.. Sven goran was apparently a top manager too.. I though international managers were when they’ve had enough of football. In the twilight of their career. Win the big one with all their experience before they bow out… Like Steve Mclaren and Big Sam and Hodgson.. Whoever picks our managers from the English FA board have been failing for decades…. Southgate is like Ole, well out of his depth.

We had the majority of possession against them 60 something percent and we had chances, Kane Dele Tintin bottled them.. Of course we could have won mate it was a close match.

Whom having done his best taking the team as far he could go, mentally scarred by the Liverpool final defeat ought to have bowed out gracefully after the loss against under par opponents who were there for the taking had we exploited the opportunity but once again fluffed our lines on the big occasion!

A lifeless performance from Poch.

Spurs were never winning that Champions League Final with or without Lucas. That was a Liverpool team starting to peak and with a defence that gave nothing away.

There is no chance Spurs could have scored three goals against that Liverpool team.

But England had a world class manager in Capello who won pretty much everything at club level. Look how that turned out for you.

Some managers just suit international football. Less things to worry about day to day, how their couple of weeks of focus, then relax about for a month before the next couple of games.

Agree 100% on Kane being roughed up by the Italian defenders, it was the same when we played Juve years back in Europe, he didn’t like the contact and vanished then too and they obviously remembered.
On the CL final I think you’re right, although Mousa was stupidly let go in Jan wasn’t he?

Southgate is just a disaster. He played for the penalties which was so negative and sad.. He should never be the England manager. What’s his credentials exactly? He relegated Middlesbrough and then went to coach the under 21 English kids for 9 years. England need a proper manager. Of course Grealish should be starting. I think Bellingham should have played more too… But these are all just excuses for Kane not to show up.

Will always have a place in my Spurs memory bank…wonderful player but something was not 100% right…hopefully he will bring out a book some time so we know the what happened behind the scenes…

Against Italy I thought Kane was game for the first 15 minutes. Two hard tackles by both Chiellieni and Bonucci and then he vanishes for the rest of the game.. Two old boys both past their peak had Kane in their pockets for the rest of the match.. Kanes 3 finals with us he fails to score in each and every one. Cold hard facts mate. Drogba scores in 4 out of 5 of his finals.. I’ve always criticised Botchys decisions.. Dembele should have started in both the league cup and CL finals. And of course Lucas should have started. He proved he was a big match player by dragging us there single handed.

A tad harsh to accuse Kane of bottling finals. Perhaps you ought direct your ire and criticise Poch for selecting Kane instead of Moura for the CL final and question Southgate’s chronic strategic tactical failure to omit Grealish from the starting line up or at least bring him on early on in the second half for purposes of aiding instead of hindering England’s cause!!

Legends win stuff.. Mackey, Blanchflower, Greaves, Hoddle, Villa, etc are all legends, they turned up in the big games and they won silverware… Which is why Kane now has it all to prove if he wants to be a ledge.. He’s bottled 3 finals so far for us and 1 for England.

If he had taken on the captain’s armband and led more vocally at times on the pitch I would say he deserves the status of a legend alongside Jan.He seemed at times to be the perfect choice as a skipper. He was a world-class defender and to be honest is still probably better than most of the back four we currently have. I am sure Conte would have liked to have had him there still as an option but no we retain the likes of Sanchez and Dier and let Toby leave instead. The fact that he was not part of a winning team was as much to do with the quality around him and ENICs lack of investment in the team rather than his own abilities
