NORTH LONDON DERBY LIVE BLOG
By Harry Hotspur -

It’s Arsenal who will play host this time in the 169th league edition of the North London Derby, and after a dismal start to their Premier League campaign with three losses without scoring, they have recovered to win consecutive PL matches 1-0.

That means we could see the ‘Gunners’ record a hattrick of league wins ‘to nil’ for the first time since July 2020, a result boss Mikel Arteta would likely be delighted within this huge derby that’s clearly an early test of both teams’ ambitions.

To do so, they’d have to achieve something that’s evaded them for seven seasons, and that’s win successive PL games against rivals Tottenham.

They ran out 2-1 winners in March, and although the form guide will be discarded when these teams walk out of the Emirates tunnel, the hosts do have a comforting H2H home record, losing just once to ‘Spurs’ in the last 28 home PL matches (W16, D11).

Spurs themselves have only seen two different results all season, as all their hard work to earn three 1-0 victories to start their PL season was undone by back-to-back 3-0 defeats. The common denominator? Those defeats were both London derbies, and a similar result here would see Spurs lose three consecutive league games by 3+ goals for the first time in their entire history.

Still getting used to the Spurs hotseat, Nuno Espírito Santo shouldn’t look to his predecessors for any words of advice, as only one of the last ten Spurs managers to take charge of a North London Derby have won their first top-flight meeting with Arsenal (D5, L4).

Players to watch:Alexandre Lacazette will be ‘gunning’ to become the first Arsenal player to score in four consecutive home league fixtures against Spurs, whilst ‘one of their own’

Harry Kane failed to score against Arsenal in the last H2H – he’s never gone consecutive games without scoring against his side’s rivals.

Hot stat: Arsenal have scored at least once in their last 22 PL home matches against Spurs.

I’ve tried to give it time, but it’s still embarrassing.
That lot up the road look like they’re finally getting themselves together again, and we just had to be the catalysts for it, didn’t we?
To rub salt in the wounds, they had two academy graduates bag an assist and a goal apiece against us. They’re probably going to be solid within the England set-up within the next year or two.
Who have we got coming through our academy, realistically, that can compete with that!?

The club is, i believe, is in crisis. When you look at the squad we have, Harry and Son apart what quality do we have? Our recruitment is abysmal based on cost parameters rather than need and ability and our world class academy spews out journeymen like Tanganga, Winks and with respect Skipp.
The paying fans are treated not only to mediocrity at best but also tedious football. Unless you enjoy the conviviality of going I cannot imagine a more dire prospect than going to the new destination.
The way things are shaping up we might be grateful at the seasons end for the three wins we had at the start of the season not that Nuno is likely to be around then.
The club ethos personified by Nicholson and Blanchflower has been crushed by the money grabbing parasites who now own the club with the sole purpose of enriching themselves.

Reality hitting hard home and Enic/Levy. I repeat if you believe Nuno will achieve what Jose and Poch couldn’t achieve with the likes of Dier Dele Winks Sanchez etc and Kane and N’Dombele who don’t want be in this club you live in la la land and have 0 football brain, this club needs someone who understands how to build a football team not property or salesman until is solved that obvious problem there will be 0 chance of winning anything. Levy needs to leave for good with 0 interference the football side of the business unless that happens this club will suffer more humiliation and shame on the pitch and Enic/Levy series continues wait and see.

We lost, we were a good team a few years ago but now we’re sh*te and we lose to even sh*te teams.

There’s not much to say, I don’t want to put all of this on Nuno but he’s not got it in him ton turn this sh*t around. Not sure who has, but it’s not him…

Old Hearn has done it again. Immediately all the talk is rematch rematch rematch. Just like the Ruiz farce, laughing all the way to the bank.
Levy will be on the phone to hawk out the events arena again….there’s certainly no football team worth playing in it.

Levy is a genius in that he runs a mediocre football team yet is lauded as a genius for building a stadium more than twice the original budget. The only genius I see is that he did all this by stealth without risking a penny for ENIC.

For being two times over budget? (I think it’s more than three times!) and a year late because of his control freakery that drove everybody nuts and no doubt increased the costs. This wretched man is able to line his own pockets, enhancing his property portfolio, by effectively taking the fans’ money to build his white elephant and killing off their hopes of ever seeing Spurs carry off the big prizes. Is there no justice, no appropriate karma for this appalling man?

I think it was three times over budget. In 2016 I seem to remember the figure for the stadium being 400 million and I thought, well, it’ll probably be 700 million then! And what was it in the end? 1.3 billion. A waste of money. And, let us not forget, a year late in delivery. He is an evil genius, though, because somehow he has managed to hoodwink the media and some of our fans into believing that he is doing a good job, in spite of winning just one league cup in 20 years and now seemingly steering the club back towards the place in the table we were in when this unfortunate adventure with the thoroughly useless ENIC began. Another hideous aspect to all this is that he’s the best paid CEO, despite his conspicuous lack of success on the pitch and having been in charge for the lions share of a record 30 year period for us without winning either the league title or the FA Cup.Unbelievable.

Pity about our goal; if we hadn’t scored it, it would have been a new record for us ie the first time, apparently, in our history that we would have lost three successive league matches by 3+ goals! We’re not going to return to the top under this lot, so I was hoping Arsenal would rattle in further goals to put the heat on Levy.

A 6-0 loss would of really sent out the message… its ironic we lost the previous 2 games due to being out of gas from/around 60 mins onwards mainly because Tanguy/lo no show or both have started & are fecked….this time Tanguy startered but having played 90 mins Thursday was gassed when we started net result we lost the game in the first half instead.. ingenious that…😂🤤🤣

all this hysteria because spurs are at best a mid table team…”orf wiv his head!” cry the eternal moaners. “sack nuno-bring back a guy (poch) who never won a thing either ” “lynch the owner!” for goodness sake a bit of perspective is needed..these things happen in cycles and until we either develop or buy at least 2 world class talents then things wont really change…accept it, theres 19 other teams in league who all want to win things too but 19 into 4 doesnt quite go lol..personally i think relegation might do spurs a bit of good in long run..a time to regroup etc and if the relegations lasts for 2-3 seasons maybe so much the better in one way..it will rid the club and the fans of their sense of entitlement…and we should win a few more games in the championship than we do at present.

I have. I’m going with a poor command of the English language because the context of your use of the ‘off the rails’ metaphor was inappropriate, when used in reference to the ‘shopping trolley’ metaphor. You combined the two to create a sentence that made no sense. Ie shopping trolleys don’t run on rails…

jesus christ ..nobodys that obtuse..ok ok the trolley referred both to the food trolley ok? and your mates mental condition…at the same time…and who said it was a SHOPPING trolley..i didnt..it was a trolley transporting stale buns and lukewarm tea….could have been a trolley bus or tram which did run both on rails and an overhead power line…now while trams are defunct it may well be that your mate has built rails to propel his trolley round the deepest depths of anti levy country..ive no way of knowing….hope this helps

Whatever the team needs to compete at a level that reflects the supposed ‘ambition’ claimed by ENIC before during and after building the shopping centre.

So higher than the 7th highest wage bill and 16th net spend. At a level that puts us closer to the aspirations of clubs actually occupying the positions we are led to believe we aspire to.

You want details on team spending over the relevant time periods? I suggest you look them up rather than listen to mine, which you will refute anyway to back up your baseless claims. Then come back and attempt to justify them in relation to the 8th richest club on the world.

it’s also about a coherent transfer policy and paying the going rate to obtain and keep the quality of player that will facilitate all of the above.

it’s fairly simple really.

spurs have been mediocre for nigh on 3 seasons now ,its not new. happy about it? of course not.my point is the mediocrity is down to the players and manager(s) and yes of course the scouting system ,the advisors who tell levy “this guys worth buying” now one could argue levy should appoint scouts who can scout ,advisors who can advise ,managers who can manage…and yes the building of the stadium has put club in debt which has other ramifications also..but in the long term the stadium will pay dividends ,bringing in the money that can allow spurs to spend on decent players . i much preferred the old white hart lane to be honest but you all want more money to be spent and the stadium will bring that in in the fullness of time…i cant see why some cant see that…levy as a person i couldnt care less about dont hate him dont love him

They must be using that money for something, so it’s obviously being funnelled into obtaining capital assets if they operate the football on those levels.

I’m biased towards NOT wanting our owners to underspend on the team in order to spend on capital assets, not make us anchor tenants, yje list goes on. You are clearly biased towards being in favour of this, which means you’re either mentally ill or obviously not a fan…

another assumption u are in habit of making…never at any time have i said im biased towards what you are accusing me of…..u make 1 assumption ,then another assumption based on the first assumption which then gives u a conclusion based on b.s assumptions…..so youre not biased huh? you dont have an underlying hatred of levy, enic and anyone associated with them, and dont base your assumptions promoted as facts based again on your obvious bias? i could just as easily make a case for you not being a fan ,but instead posing as one to turn folk against the club….i certainly wouldnt accuse anyone of being mentally ill unless i knew…suspicion wouldnt be enough….but over and above your rantings about enic etc you come across as a spoilt kid ,who fed up that spurs are useless starts lashing out at something, someone to vent his fury cos he cant have what he wants ..i.e a successfull spurs side..is your life really that empty? grow up for goodness sake

heres another question for you two jokers….if levy is only intrested in lining his pocketrs, has no interest in the football side,no interest in making spurs a force to be reckoned with plus associated financial skullduggery can you explain why he brought romero (supposedly best centre back in europe) to spurs for 50 odd million, why he brought ndombele another 50 million acquisition to the club who at time was considered an amazing talent, why he brought lo celso ,another highly regarded platyer to the club.docherty who wasnt cheap, and few others.now at least 2 of them werent worth twopence ,but im sure at time of purchase the opposite was thought…so why waste that money instead of trousering it himself? you see theres a conflict there somewhere ..even you two should see that.

Because he’s let Verts and Toby go within 12 months of each other and we had to bring in a senior central defender. He wants us to stay in the league, it’s a cash cow. He’ll spend enough on the team to keep us in the top half etc, he obviously doesn’t want relegation.

There’s a massive difference from keeping a team treading water and one challenging. We’ve been treading water for 22 years. That’s the point we’re making, dosey…

Er… so you’ve walked right into this one haven’t you smart ar*e?

Our whole point is that the owners of a club this size should be paying the wages that keep the eplayers to build a decent side that might challenge for something.

And why do you keep bringing up Poch? I’m only making the point that our relative success under him with the paltry budget he was working on was fairly remarkable. Or are you going to try and argue with that as well? Bozo…

the paltry budget? do you have the figures?
he had a decent side with this paltry budget-they DID challenge for stuff all on this “paltry budget” of yours..so how much more should have been provided to pochettino? how do you know if buying another ndombele type player would have improved things? truth is you dont neither does anyone else..and u fail to mention that our relative success then was largely due to the big clubs rebuilding thius giving us and leicester a window

.. why do i keep bringing up poch? i dont -you do..u stated u think an agreement is in place whereby poch returns…that wasnt me..i didnt write that you wrote that…sounds like another silly assumption ..your posts are awash with them ..some might say deluged with them…what was it exactly ive “walked right into”..id be interested to know….as for you and your mate sonimficient ..you two should take your double act on the road…label yourself the 2 stooges or the know all-know f**k all brothers -you might make some extra money…..pumpkin

It just so happens that you are now one of a very tiny minority of people who are not on the same page I see them myself, other posters and the owner of this site. You’re the odd one out, and there is a clear reason for that.

If you can find a Levy/ENIC apologist blog, or one full of apologists then that’s probably where you should be spending your time. Spurs have a large fan base (though in the era of TV and oligarchs that doesn’t matter as much as it once did), so it’s reasonable for them to have SOME sense of entitlement, while their cycle of failure has run for so long it’s understandable that there is so much frustration around. It may be, as I point out lower down, that Spurs have lost their aura of greatness and future cycles of success will be appreciably more modest.

I don’t agree with the entitlement remarks by Derek, either. This isn’t a case of Liverpool or Man Utd type fans who moan and whinge when they have ONE bad season but of fans who haven’t seen any tangible success in the past 30 years now with just two league cups won in that period and no league title since 1961. A club with a fan base the size of Tottenham’s IS entitled to feel that it’s long overdue for success to come around again.

Does seem like the Super League was the Levy gamblers ‘hail mary’ move that would solve all his (our?) woes.

I don’t know what his plan is now? Follow the Arsenal ‘just try and not get relegated while paying off the stadium debt’ model?

One thing is for sure – our recruitment has to be better. The big money purchases of Lo Celso, Ndombele and Bergwijn have all flopped to varying degrees. Even Sanchez cost a fair whack, and again, bit of a flop.

Reply to  Dino

Agreed, the midfield performance was one of the worst I’ve ever seen in a NLD.

Skipp looks committed and mostly effective and that’s better than Alli.

Bergwijn at least brings pace and a physicality, which is a lot more than Kane or Son are giving us right now.

Gil could be a live wire – obviously needs to bulk up a bit eventually and I’m sure for now he’s more effective from the bench for at least half of this season while he acclimatises.

Romero has to replace one of Sanchez or Dier – we need to play him into form, this is now close to an emergency. Hojbjerg needs to realise that being a leader/(supposed) organiser is all good but he seems to end up playing at being a minder for another player most of the time. The number of times he’s standing right next to another defender or midfielder is bizarre at this point. Seems like he feels he’s fire fighting the whole game, where’s the confidence of old?

I think we need to play 3 cb’s.. I think Dier & Sanchez couldnt do too much today… they had no one to collect the ball from midfield & so had to revert to knocking it long which was pointless… the problem was it was often 1 v 3 in centre midfield which exposed the defence time after time.

We are sinking without a trace at the moment, and Nuno is not the answer for either the short, medium, or long-term.

I think the approach for him in the summer was genuine, and the chaos that followed was because it wasn’t possible. The Spurs job is currently a caretaker role, not officially but that’s what it is. Watch this space.

Can’t see caretaker’s role lasting 2 years thou. Unless something drasticly changes, we could be looking for a new head coach very soon

Well hold on, he’s been given a two year contract. We also don’t know the terms, but you don’t give any manager less than a two year contract these days. Even if you know they’re only going to be around for nine months for example.

We’re still one of the richest clubs in the world…long term prospects you have to still (despite everything) say Spurs are a bigger job and have more chance of sustained success. I know, it sounds unlikely but there is a chance – we’re set up better now than when Poch arrived.

Leicester have reached their ceiling, an incredible ride for them, but all good things must fizzle and end.

Yes, I think Leicester will soon fizzle out, but I’m not sure how rich a club we actually are when you throw in our debt. We may be finished as a major club and have a future similar to Aston Villa’s over the past 100 years; by 1920, Villa had won both the league and cup six times each; they’ve won each just once since then, though they’ve remained a sizeable club. Things can change: when Newcastle won the FA Cup in 1955, they had won as many league titles and FA Cups as Man Utd and Liverpool combined! And when I started following football in 1964-65, Everton had won more than Liverpool, who, that season, won the Cup for the very first time!

Villa went 71 years between league titles; it’s 61 years for us this season and it seems unlikely we’ll win it in the next 10 years without an expansion of European football, European league, more matches for the big boys to have to play etc

There’s no guarantees and I don’t know exactly how much the debt alters expenditure on the team itself…we’re underperforming any way you look at it though.

Maybe Spurs manager is now a poisoned chalice or maybe if the right candidate comes along we will pull out all the stops as Levy could get desperate. He’ll feel burnt by the Jose experience though, he burned through a lot of money gambling on that appointment working out.

I mention lobotomies lower down and Poch would surely require one if he decided to work for Levy again!

Who is there? I don’t think whoever it is will be in for the long term or even the medium term. So possibly you need an older warhorse who can just get a tune out of this lot or at least try with a different approach. Someone who isn’t worried about tainting their career whatever. Hence Redknapp’s name being banded about. Are there any other older guys knocking around who might do it?

Lol that you think we had 9.5 players on the pitch. That’s being generous.

I haven’t seen Nuno’s presser but please Nuno don’t say, ‘I think we won the second half. We must work harder’.

He was one of the few actually interested in the job when the top guys all turned Levy down. We are getting what Levy paid for, nothing more.

I think even with the extra money from the new stadium it still won’t be enough to have us win things regularly.

We will never know. We had a decent war chest until Levy spunked it all on the toilet bowl. Imagine 300m spent on the team we had then?……

No one can be successful under Levy. Poch got close but still rewarded with two barren transfer windows. Shameful.

Does Levy not understand that the rest of the football world are watching this stuff? Everybody knew that Pochettino was doing a good job on the budget, they also saw how little backing he got. Then they got Jose in, and he couldn’t do anything with the situation.

Levy has just poisoned the whole concept of managing Tottenham. When he’s got the cheek to talk about the club’s DNA, it’s enough to make you want to puke…

The problem is he wants champagne money for lemonade players. Our owner is worth 5 Billion if he was like the Russian in South West London he would throw a bit of his personal wealth at this and make us a force to be reckoned with.

But it doesn’t really matter who is manager as long as the regime is still in place.

Two more defeats and he’s gone for me.

What an embarrassment, what a complete shambles we’ve been reduced to while this nausea inducing cr*p about the stadium keeps getting rolled out by the club.

The stadium is old hat, it’s two years old and has no main sponsor, the team are going nowhere other than heading for the bottom half of the league, if not worse.

You could not have made this up, really quite shocking actually…

Arsenal and Spurs could be twinned as clubs, both made the same gamble on a new stadium and both are crippled by debt and gross mismanagement.

It’s horrible the way we are turning into a mirror image of the Arsenal who have become irrelevant in terms of winning trophies.
