New manager could sell £85k-a-wk Spurs star who has ‘played poorly’ for months

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has been criticised heavily for his error-prone performances.

The England international has not been at his best and he was recently dropped by Ryan Mason during Tottenham’s game against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Writing in his column with the Times, Tony Cascarino has now revealed that Mason made the right call and his decision to drop Dier was justified.

Cascarino added that Dier does not have any standout skills and he is on a poor run of form for quite some time.

He further added that the Tottenham defender’s future hangs in the balance, and it wouldn’t be surprising if his time at the club came to an end this summer.

Cascarino wrote: “Eric Dier losing his starting spot was long overdue. He has played poorly since the World Cup and while the Tottenham Hotspur defender is versatile, he lacks a standout skill.

“New head coaches, even interim ones, need to make a statement when taking over a struggling team, so dropping Dier was a natural decision for Ryan Mason.

“Dier has been at Spurs since 2014 and I wonder whether this summer’s head coach appointment will determine his future in north London.”

Spurs are set to bring in a new manager to replace Antonio Conte permanently, and it remains to be seen whether the new appointment is willing to give Dier opportunities to play at the club next season.

It is no secret that Spurs will have to bring in defensive upgrades and the new manager could look to bring in a quality central defender to partner Cristian Romero.

Tottenham need a better squad if they want to challenge for major trophies and Dier is certainly not good enough to start for a team hoping to win the league title or the Champions League in the future.

While the £85k-a-week Tottenham player is quite versatile and he can slot into multiple roles and be a useful member of the first-team squad, Tottenham must look to aim higher if they want to bridge the gap with clubs like Manchester City in the coming seasons.
