Djed Spence’s future at Tottenham is in doubt, as former Spurs player Paul Robinson has claimed that the young full-back will likely be sold if manager Antonio Conte signs a new contract with the club.
The former Spurs number 1 believes that the player’s future is dependent on who the next manager will be.
Robinson told Football Insider:
“If Antonio Conte stays I cannot see Djed Spence staying. The manager’s contract is up at the end of the season though. Spence’s future is probably dependent on who is the manager. The current manager is clearly not a fan.”
Spence joined Spurs from Middlesborough for £20million in the summer but Conte is said to be not a fan of him and has publicly stated that the signing was a decision made by the club, not him.
Spence has only managed to make 6 appearances for Spurs since joining the club, and in January he signed with French club Rennes on loan.
Robinson commented on Spence’s situation, saying:
“Spence needed to leave. The manager clearly did not fancy him. He hardly played at all. You question who made that signing. The fact that Emerson Royal is playing ahead of him… That shows you that the manager does not want you.”
Despite Conte’s disinterest in Spence, the young full-back has shown promise and quality on the pitch. As Robinson pointed out:
“He needed to go out and play games…It will allow his performances to go under the radar a little bit. It is not a league that is in the media here.”
The comments from Paul Robinson highlight the situation that the player is facing at Tottenham. As Robinson mentions, Spence has not been near the starting lineup and his future at the club is uncertain.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the current manager, Antonio Conte, is not a fan of the player. However, Conte’s contract is up at the end of the season, so there is a possibility that he could be replaced by a new manager who may have different plans for the team and could see Spence as a valuable player.
While Spence’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain, his loan move to Rennes will give him the chance to showcase his skills and continue to develop as a player.
Meanwhile Spurs signed Sporting Lisbon’s Pedro Porro on deadline day.
He signed on loan ahead of a £47m deal and is expected to cement himself as Spurs’ first-choice right-back in the coming weeks with Emerson Royal said to be the backup option.
