Napoli shortlist 29-year-old Tottenham man for winter transfer

By The Boy -

The Sun this morning is running with the suggestion that Eric Dier could be shortlisted for a move to Serie A after a report from the Italian outlet, Il Mattino, which says Napoli is in the market for a new centre-half ahead of the January market.

Napoli is currently struggling in 14th place and would therefore be inclined to look to the winter window to get themselves back on track for the remainder of the season.

Dier has hit somewhat of a dead-end at Tottenham and under the current coach, the player who hits the ripe old age of thirty next month, has only made two appearances for the Lilywhites.

This is Dier’s tenth season wearing the Spurs shirt, and it is surely time that he did the decent thing and looked to finish his career doing something a little more remarkable than making the occasional supporting appearance on Ange Postecoglou’s bench.

Some players simply aren’t cut out for the Australian’s brand of football, but this need not reflect poorly upon them. Additionally, the pace of the game in Serie A might suit Dier better.

That said, the former England player did speak recently about a desire to return to FC Porto, and given this is the last year of his current deal, he may choose to exit N17 then. “One day, I am sure I will be back,” he was quoted by PA as saying at the Web Summit in Lisbon.

“I think it is inevitable. If my wife wants to, we’ll come back one day to live when I have finished my career. Sporting is my club, it will always be my club, it’s where I spent 12 years. Portugal as well for me is my home. I’m 29, so I hope I have a lot of years left to play. I’m still young. Football is my priority.”
