Michael Dawson states that Tottenham Hotspur wasted their money on Bryan Gil

When Tottenham Hotspur £21.6-million and sent Erik Lamela to Sevilla for Bryan Gil, it seemed as though the north London club was acquiring the next young Spanish talent. However, the 21-year-old struggled to find consistent playing time.

A few months into his first season with Spurs, Gil would depart last month, heading on loan to Valencia. During a segment on Sky Sports (via HITC), Michael Dawson stated that

Tottenham has wasted their money on Gil despite the young forward not fully establishing himself with the Premier League club.

“So you are looking at £40-£50 million worth of player there, and he has gone out on loan six months later,” Dawson said.

“It’s obviously for his development, I get that, but you are paying that kind of money; for Spurs, you have to bring a player in who can improve the team, not the squad.”

Spurs didn’t include any clauses in the loan that would allow Gil to remain with Valencia past June. There is no option or obligation to buy clause, so Tottenham views the winger as a part of their future.

Nonetheless, the Spanish club will reportedly ask the Premier League side to extend their loan with Gil. It will be interesting to see if Gil can find his confidence these next few months and come back to north London to become a more prominent player on the squad.
