Micah Richards slams Tottenham star for his approach during games

Tottenham crashed to a 2-0 defeat against North London rivals Arsenal on Sunday and BBC pundit Micah Richards has now hit out at Harry Kane for his tendency to drop deep during games.

Richards claimed that Tottenham’s approach against Arsenal was way too negative and they paid the price for that. He also added that Harry Kane’s tendency to drop deep in order to be involved in the build-up play leaves his teammates frustrated.

“In terms of the way they are set up, it’s a little bit too negative,” he said on BBC’s The Monday Night Club

“Kane is again coming too deep, which must be frustrating for all of his teammates.

“When he’s not having the best of games, he’s going to be involved which then leaves nobody up-front which is even harder to do when you have so many players back.”

The 29-year-old has a habit of dropping too deep during games leaving his teammates with no options upfront. Harry Kane is an exceptional goal scorer and Tottenham would benefit from having him in and around the box.

There is no doubt that Kane is a complete forward and his play-making skills are exceptional as well. However, Tottenham need him as their goal scorer instead of him trying to be a playmaker as well.

The likes of Son Heung-Min have not been able to find the back of the net consistently and therefore the goal-scoring burden is on Kane right now. The England international cannot afford to drop deep time and again leaving his teammates short of options in the box.

The defeat to Arsenal has left Tottenham struggling for a place in the top four and it will be interesting to see if Antonio Conte can turn things around in the coming weeks and help his side secure a place in the Champions League next season.
