Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga is set to leave the club permanently when his contract expires at the end of the month.
He was on loan at Championship club Millwall this past season and the 25-year-old impressed with them. Millwall manager Neil Harris has now admitted that he would like to sign the player permanently.
He said (h/t London News Online): “It’s really important that everybody understands, not just Neil Harris and his team-mates, but the whole football club is a big fan of Japhet Tanganga.
“I think I have made that clear in previous articles – I would love to work with him. Japhet is a player who will be in demand over this transfer window.
“As a football club, sometimes, we can only push as far when we go through a process which is involving individuals, agents and football clubs. It’s safe to say that we have pushed hard to see if Japhet is a possibility for us in this window.”
The versatile defender is highly rated at the Championship club and he is admired by the manager and his teammates. Joining them permanently could be the ideal move for the player right now. He needs to join the club where he will play regularly and Millwall will be able to provide him with that opportunity.
It will be interesting to see if any Premier League club comes calling for him in the coming weeks. He could prove to be a useful acquisition on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old is versatile enough to operate as the central defender as well as a full-back. He was highly rated when he broke into the first-team scene at Tottenham. However, he never really managed to establish himself as a starter for the North London club.
It seems that the level of football in the Championship suits him and it remains to be seen where he ends up. Neil Harris believes that the defender will be a player in demand this summer. It wouldn’t be a surprise if multiple clubs tried to sign him. He could prove to be a major bargain on a free transfer.
