Man Utd plot to scupper Spurs bid to sign Premier League man facing relegation

Manchester United is prepared to beat Tottenham to the signature of Sam Johnstone, according to ESPN.

The English goalkeeper has been one of the most impressive shot-stoppers in the Premier League this season, despite West Brom’s relegation troubles.

They might go down, but he looks set to stay in the top flight as he has plenty of teams interested in his signature.

Spurs see the 28-year-old as the perfect deputy to Hugo Lloris.

But the report says because Lloris’ future remains uncertain and the Lilywhites have no new manager yet, they have fallen behind in the race to sign him.

He came through the ranks at United before they allowed him to join West Brom in 2018.

The Red Devils now want him back as a backup to Dean Henderson.

They expect to offload David de Gea in the summer because the Spaniard will not want to continue playing second fiddle to Henderson and his wages are too much for a backup goalkeeper.

The same report claims that West Ham also has an interest in Johnstone’s signature with David Moyes prepared to offer him regular playing time should he join.

West Brom values him at £18m, but his current deal expires next year and he could leave them in the summer for a reduced fee.
