Giovani Lo Celso’s performance last night was generally speaking nothing to get excited about, however, even on bad night, the boy is still worth watching.
The Independent‘s Vithushan Ehantharajah summed the Argentinian up superbly this morning, saying that Giovani brings the perfect balance of light and dark to Mourinho’s squad. An angel with a dirty face.
I saw a couple of negative Tweets last night about Lo Celso’s physicality, and I dutifully ignored them.

Bruno is better (and we should have signed him), but he is surrounded by better players at Utd. If he had to pass to Serge, Davies, Winks and Sissoko he wouldn’t be firing like he is. He has some great attacking options ahead of him and they look like there is a plan in the final third and when counter attacking. Not sure we do, in terms of the plan. We are definitely not playing to Kane’s strengths.
As I was reading this I was hoping you mentioned Taylor. Puddnhead. Brilliant.
I do think Lo Celso is being over-egged. Bruno Fernandez is a better player because he has end results, goals and assists. Lo Celso has diddly so far. Yes he works hard for the team and runs around a lot, but so does Lamela. Lo Celso only looks good because he’s basically surrounded by crud.I want to see some end result from him before I jump on the band wagon. I remember this page posting video clips of N’Dombele in his pre season games saying how brilliant he was, remember H?
Oh for a Brian Clough. Mourinho is trying to do what Clough did with the giants of the game (in money terms) level the playing field. He had to make up for lack of resources by great coaching, brilliant talent spotting and getting the best out of players nobody else wanted. Crucially though Clough had a fellow genius alongside him for a while Peter Taylor. Mourinho’s got puddnhead.
I like him. He has a lot of key attributes. Technique, Effort and a bit of nastiness. Be nice to see an end product. Eddie is right, he needs players around him. Passing to Aurier, Davies, Sissoko and Winks seems self defeating. Brian Clough once said only pass to players better than you. Lo Celso before lockdown was in trouble!
He’s a quality player with much more to come and he wasn’t cheap either. It’s money we’ll spent.
He still needs the support of better players around him to make us a more competitive side.
