“Like a mad man” – Pundit criticises Tottenham star for his role in Newcastle’s opener

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has faced criticism for his role in Newcastle United’s opening goal during the 2-1 defeat earlier today.

Former Liverpool forward and Sky Sports pundit Daniel Sturridge was particularly surprised by Romero’s decision-making, which he believes significantly contributed to Harvey Barnes scoring the opener.

The critical moment occurred just before halftime when Newcastle took the lead through a well-executed play finished by Barnes.

Sturridge highlighted that the sequence began with Romero aggressively pressing forward after clearing a defensive corner. This decision left a noticeable gap in Tottenham’s defense, which Newcastle quickly exploited.

While Romero’s pressing was intended to apply pressure and disrupt Newcastle’s buildup, Sturridge noted that Tino Livramento’s ability to maintain control and find Barnes in a dangerous position was pivotal.

With Romero out of position, Barnes capitalized on the opportunity, received a precise cross, and scored with a clinical finish.

Speaking during Sky Sports coverage, the former Liverpool forward commented:

“He’s pressing like a mad man, which I actually respect it to be fair because the intention is good, trying to put pressure on the ball, he expects Livramento to play it back, [but] he’s got the ability to be able to manipulate it.

“And from there as it develops, you see Harvey Barnes in the centre of the pitch, almost playing like a number 10, fantastic cross into the box and the finish man – got to give him respect for that fantastic finish first time.”

Tottenham pushed hard for an equaliser, benefitting from a late own goal by Dan Burn and continuous pressure from players like Brennan Johnson.

However, they were unable to find the decisive goal, and Newcastle ultimately secured the victory with a late strike from Alexander Isak.
