Levy wants to get rid of 29-year-old in the January transfer window

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy plans to sell Eric Dier in the January transfer window.

Dier was strongly linked with a move away from Spurs in the summer after failing to impress Ange in the pre-season.

Despite interest from other clubs, Dier chose to remain at Tottenham and even declined a move to Fulham, opting to stay and compete for a place in the squad.

Spurs, on the other hand, had sought to sell the player during the summer but after failing to get a new centre-back in while letting go of Davinson Sanchez and Tanganga, Dier ended up staying.

With Dier’s contract expiring in the next summer, the club’s chairman sees the upcoming January window as an opportunity to sell him, potentially avoiding losing the player on a free transfer.

A new centre-back in January is high on priority for new sporting director Johan Lange, specially after the injury to Micky van de Ven. The likes of Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Palace’s Marc Guehi have all been linked with Spurs.

According to the report, AS Roma, now managed by former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, and Sporting Lisbon have both expressed interest in signing Dier.

It further adds that while Levy ideally wants to sell the player in January, the England international is inclined to see out the final months of his contract at Tottenham, which would enable him to leave on a free transfer and potentially negotiate a more lucrative contract with another club in the summer.

Dier started his first league game against Wolves this season and was not at his best with him being blamed for both the goals Spurs conceded in a 2-1 defeat.

He is the only backup option in the position however and Spurs will need to sign a defender in January before selling him.

Tottenham’s new sporting director, Johan Lange, has identified the signing of a new center-back as a high priority for the upcoming transfer window, especially after Micky van de Ven sustained a long-term injury against Chelsea.

Several players, including Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth, Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer Leverkusen, and Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, have been linked with a move to Spurs.
