Levy facing backlash from rival Premier League clubs

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly set to face a tense reaction from the club’s Premier League rivals.

Spurs have received a backlash after the decision to use the government’s scheme to furlough non-playing staff as they took a 20 percent pay cut this week amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Widely used by small businesses to protect jobs, it has been argued the job retention scheme is not aimed at Premier League clubs and particularly not as a primary strategy with the players continuing to be paid a full salary.

That has led to countless pundits and fans hitting out at Tottenham after the statement was published on Tuesday confirming the decision, and now The Sun report that Levy could also be in hot water with league rivals.

It’s suggested that the Spurs chief has been accused of damaging the Premier League’s reputation in private, and that he will face an awkward shareholder meeting on Friday with the 20 clubs set to discuss the current issues facing the campaign via video conference.

With all fixtures suspended until April 30 at the earliest, it remains to be seen what talks on Friday result in as with sharp increases in the number of cases and deaths in the UK this week, football at the start of May is perhaps looking increasingly unlikely.

As for Levy, he could now face a frosty reception from Tottenham’s rivals for his decision-making this week.
