Levy Bombshell#1 Spurs Can’t Match Shirt Sales

By The Boy -

Our boy Levy spoke with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust.

What we learned confirms a number of points that have been occasionally contested by Levyologists.

Realism was also needed that other clubs sell more shirts than THFC, which has an impact on the fee.

THST

This is particularly chilling.

Spurs get a comparatively mediocre deal compared with other so called big Premier League sides.

Hopefully a small penny is dropping with some of the hardcore loons who still fail/refuse to understand the correlation between winning trophies and money.

Success breeds success.

This summer, Spurs will troop off to some fabulous place in Asia with the aim of securing some ‘market penetration’.

The reality is, people who’ve yet to pick side – tend to opt for ones that win stuff – because that is the metric. It’s like when you’re in a the bookies. You look for the animals that are going to win.

There was also some reassurance about transfer spending.

Given our transfer spending wouldn’t be affected by nuclear war, I have nothing constructive to add.

Given all the spin we’ve had to endure thus far, I too am not wholly convinced that we’ll get to play in the new stadium this season (frankly, I’ll believe it when I see it!) though, as I’ve stated below, with feelings the way they are among the more prescient and, hopefully, growing band of such supporters, a less high profile late season, midweek game may suit old baldy better than a grand season opening affair in August.

Yes. In short which serious sponsor would invest in a football club where the owners use the money to pay interest on a huge debt and trouser some of the cash. Don’t buy players. Win fak all but bang out some top cheese and wine. Answers on a post card please.

I essentially agree with you that the chief markets to be had are Asia and Africa and not places like Solihull. I was simply making the point that Spurs don’t have the charisma outside of North London they once had and if they want to break into these developing markets they need to start winning some trophies. Pronto!

With all due respects to Solihull, and the rest of the UK, I don’t think that is the market. Most English people already have a club, or a family link to one. European fans are a little of an option, they have a local club but enjoy the PL, however the main market is Asia and Africa. The US markets are growing rather local, or if they have a European preference, they are pretty set right now. The only trophies that you will attract followers in Asia/Africa is the CL or the PL.

I’m aware the board of the 60’s was indeed known for being tight, but at least they went and bought talent for the paying fans breaking transfer records several times. Now we have a chairman who pays himself more than any other and is using fans money in a scheme to enrich himself.

Some good points here like the extra money you have to pump in for little financial reward to move up from Top Four to Title winners. But as has been pointed out, winning titles and CLs attracts more fans and then you sell more merchandise. Not too many Spurs fans around here (Solihull area) or in other parts of the country compared with the past because in the modern era we’re an irrelevance when it comes to winning trophies. A glory hunter will latch onto United and Liverpool, and to some extent, Arsenal, and more recently Chelsea and City because these are the clubs (and though seemingly in a dry spell, Arsenal have won a few FA Cups nevertheless in recent seasons) that tend to win the prizes. We’re nailed on as a club that’ll probably win a trophy (most likely a League Cup) about every ten years and never a league title or CL in all likelihood. In short, we’re not that attractive a proposition for new fans to the sport.

My God, we’ve had some poor directors and chairmen at this club. Even in the Billy Nich days, he had to tackle the board re their reputation for tight fistedness (Nicholson had asked a fellow manager after a game at The Lane whether he was coming for a drink in The Blue Room (?), only to be told “not likely, they’re too mean for my taste”). And prior to Bill, Spurs hadn’t had much tangible success through the years though often a very wealthy club – one book I’ve read said they were probably the richest club in the country in the fifties and they had some surprisingly good attendances in the thirties, even when in the second division. A well supported club, though between the wars it’s also perhaps a reflection that London didn’t suffer so much from the depression as other parts of the country.

My key issue with Enic is they think tottenham didn’t exist pre 2001. The fact that bald twat should understand is that our best days were pre enic and in black and white. It makes you think there must be Premier League regulations that preclude clubs from playing so close to the end of the season at a new stadium.I’ve always maintained they would not get into the new ground before next season.
Have these test events taken place yet?And what about getting all the certificates signed off. With all the distrust between ENIC and Harringay council I can’t believe they would be in a hurry to appease our owners, particularly knowing that the lives of the local people will be clearly impacted.
Should the game against Palace actually go ahead, they will really be up for causing an embarrassing upset.Plus we have no way of knowing how well the players will settle into the new place.Big mistake I feel.

So, Daniel says our debt won’t affect our transfers. Of course it won’t. Our transfers are dependent on hocking the family jewels and replacing them with something that looks similar but doesn’t have the same quality. Sell before we buy, so no change. How reassuring. Apparently most people don’t like change, it’s too scary. That should keep the performing seals happy.

From the pictures of it that I’ve seen, our new stadium doesn’t look particularly distinguished on the outside; rather a shame considering the amount of money that has been spent on it.

I suspect, too, that Levi quite happy after all the problems with the stadium to have a relatively low profile late season, midweek game, to launch it; a high profile beginning of season opening and a greater chance of some booing and catcalls. Very embarrassing.
What are the chances that Palace, who can be party poopers, launch our new stadium by lowering our colours and we then follow that up by going down, too, against City? Let’s hope for the best!

I agree 100% you need to win things!! You said on your other blog about the 99 Worthington cup about we are no better off than the dark days of the 90s because what is the metric. The issue is that people will argue that league position wise, we are better than just about every decade on average…THE ISSUE with this is…league position isn’t and should never be the bench mark for success. The target should NOT be top 4 anymore. The reason that was the target was to get the lucrative and prestigious CL appearances and games. They are only of value if you use said money and prestige to improve to then kick on and win things. We have sadly fallen into that space that Arsenal where in for close to 10yrs…the top 4 trophy side. Levy knows that top 4 is worth more than winning the PL in terms of NET prize money (what I mean by that is the spend it takes to reach top 4 is less than the additional spend required to win the league…it takes say £50m spend to reach top 4 and get access to £75m…it then takes a further £100m to win what is basically an additional £10m). What Levy fails to see though is this is not like building a house, where adding a loft conversion can cost X and gain you Y, and you just need to make sure Y does not take you over the value of the area…Football can sometimes bring intangible gains…as you say, winning stuff increases popularity, which in turn increases shirt sales..which in turn increases sponsorship revenue.

Sorry for long post, but I am starting to get really wound up by various people (whom I work with, not on here) telling such cobblers like “mathematically we could still win the league” and “we are building for the future” and “we don’t want to do a leeds…” Leeds happened before clubs got £200m a season simply for partaking in the 38 games due to TV revenue – to do “a leeds” we would need to throw money into the streets and jack in playing.
