Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eager to “wrap up” a two year contract extension for defender Eric Dier.
The news comes from a report by Football Insider, stating that both the club and the player are keen on getting this deal done quickly.
Dier’s current contract with Spurs runs until 2024, but the club’s management considers him a “key player” in their team. The report further states that the new Spurs manager, Antonio Conte, is a “huge” admirer of the 29-year-old defender. Although Dier is primarily a centre-back, he has shown his versatility by playing in midfield when required.
The club’s eagerness to secure Dier’s contract extension quickly is understandable, as they would like to focus their attention on negotiating a contract extension with their star striker, Harry Kane. Kane’s current contract also expires in the summer of 2024.
However, Tottenham’s defense needs strengthening, particularly on the left side. With Clement Lenglet set to return to Barcelona after his loan spell, the club will be on the hunt for a top-class left-sided center-back to partner with Dier and Romero at the back. The likes of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni have already been linked with Spurs.
Eric Dier joined Tottenham in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon, and since then, he has played a total of 351 games, scoring 13 goals and assisting 12.
However, his recent performances against Leicester City and AC Milan came under criticism. Don Hutchison blamed him for two of the four goals Spurs conceded against Brendan Rodgers’ side and also criticised him for pointing fingers at his teammates.
Spurs have had a mixed season so far, with back-to-back defeats against Leicester City and AC Milan, but they bounced back with consecutive wins against West Ham and Chelsea. Their next match is against Sheffield Wednesday in the 5th round of the FA Cup with Spurs hoping to advance to the next round of the domestic competition.
