Latest: Spurs keeping ‘close tabs’ on £60m midfielder who will ‘jump at the chance’ of signing for them

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who spoke to This is Futbol, Tottenham Hotspur will be one of many clubs interested in signing Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

Ben Jacobs previously reported that if Spurs qualify for the Champions League next season, they will be given a huge advantage in the race to sign Maddison.

Newcastle United are also said to be interested in the attacking midfielder. The Tyneside club had offered £50 million to Leicester in the summer transfer window, but they swiftly rejected the bid, claiming he was worth £60 million.

And now, O’Rourke has claimed that, while Maddison is still under contract with the Foxes, the journalist is certain that he will not stick around to fight a potential relegation battle.

He told This is Futbol:

“He’s obviously under contract at Leicester City, they wouldn’t want to see him go, but James Maddison I’m sure doesn’t see himself playing in a relegation battle all too often.

“He’s been in great form for Leicester this season, I think he’s top scorer as well.

“So, he’s always going to attract interest because he’s a top-class player.

“I’m sure Tottenham will be among a number of clubs who would be interested in signing James Maddison.”

A report from Football Insider has claimed that Spurs are keeping ‘close tabs’ on the midfielder ahead of the January window and that the player will ‘jump at the chance’ of moving to Spurs.

And Dean Jones has told GIVEMSPORT that Spurs will be looking to sign him in January. He said:

“I think that Maddison is one of the players that we’ll be hearing about in terms of Tottenham’s transfer pursuits.

“They’ve looked at it before, it’s been a tricky one, but Maddison clearly would be interested in a transfer I think in the pretty near future, and it’d be hard to turn down a proposition like Tottenham.”

Maddison is precisely the type of player Antonio Conte requires at Tottenham this season, with the club seriously lacking creativity in their attack.

The Englishman already has scored 6 times and provided 2 assists this season despite the fact that Leicester City have struggled this season.

Other clubs that could be interested in signing him are Arsenal and Manchester United.

Too old for Levy, our biggest signings are nearly always in their early 20’s with an eye towards selling them at 25-26 before their value slowly declines. Modric was the model, Tangy, LoCelso the latest attempt the do the same.

Eriksen in a decent squad with lots of young players some of whom have been at Utd 10 years or more ..not like our bunch of past it misfits..the proof of our clubs ambition is our squad…and Levy thought he would come back for 130 , 000 a week ..” Well you do have a pwacemaker Cristian”..out of sentiment.

Because Levy sees the cheap option as replacing the manager every couple of years rather than investing in the players to win trophies. All he looks for is qualification for the CL,income stream solved. And that is why we’ve won nothing of note during the tenure of ENIC,and never will until they’re gone.

We’ve had several chances to buy him before. Redknapp recommended him to Levy when he was at Coventry but Norwich bought him for £2.5 million. We subsequently scouted him at Norwich but the master negotiator dithered as usual and they sold him for £25 million to Leicester. I highly doubt that we will now pay £60 million for him. We never buy the players we should do because Levy is always looking for a bargain. We didn’t need Bissouma, so why did we buy him? We sell Walker, Trippier and K W-P and replace them with Aurier, whom we later let go for nothing, Royal, Doherty and Spence. We should be buying the likes of Milikivic-Savic, Barella, Rice and Bellingham but never will. Levy thinks that by hiring the best managers, he can get a tune out of an old fiddle but the best players win Championships. See what is happening at Liverpool. They didn’t refresh the team sufficiently in the last window and we never do.

Think he’s got Tottenham on his mind . If he goes to World Cup – and right now he’s gonna be on the plane – we might be sorry we hadn’t secured his signature .
3 or 4 players will come back with enhanced reputations ………….. Maddison is in one of those midfield exalted positions and if the fans take to you ………………..

Someone else will buy him while Levy haggles over a couple of quid.

I am of the opinion that “you never go back ” . The performance of Eriksen for Man Utd suggests that attitude is wrong but also highlighted the fact that we desperately need a player of that type = and maybe Maddison is the answer ..
For me , Alcantara , Ziyech or possibly the conversion of Kulusevski as a central attacking midfielder might well work.
It is just Christian’s play was everything that is missing at Spurs – a little subtlety , a little class and tactical nous . A player to enjoy in the Spurs mould , lovely ………….C O Y S !!
