Journalist says Arsenal thought their player was going to sign for Tottenham this summer

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to journalist James Benge, Arsenal believed their summer signings David Raya was going to join Tottenham.

Discussing Raya on Charles Watts’s YouTube channel, Benge said:

“They (Arsenal)) thought he (Raya) was going to Spurs.”

Arsenal signed Raya in the summer from Brentford while Matt Turner joined Nottingham Forest.

And while Arsenal already had Aaron Ramsdale in goal who had a great season the previous campaign, the arrival of Raya has now put his place in the starting XI under threat.

It is no secret that Tottenham Hotspur were strongly interested in signing Brentford goalkeeper David Raya this summer before the deal fell apart in the last stages.

Raya himself was reportedly eager to join Tottenham and had already agreed on personal terms with the North London club.

However, the stumbling block arose from the clubs’ inability to reach an agreement over the transfer fee.

Brentford valued their star goalkeeper at £40million, but with just one year remaining on his contract, Tottenham were not prepared to meet that asking price and sought a more reasonable fee.

Romano also previously revealed that Raya ‘was really close’ to joining Tottenham and was really excited about the move before the move collapsed.

After the move for Raya collapsed, Spurs swiftly turned their attention towards Empoli keeper Guglielmo Vicario and had the deal wrapped up in a couple of days.

Vicario has been one of the stand out performers for Spurs since coming in. The new defense with Romero, Micky van de Ven, Udogie and Porro in front of the Italian has proven to be a solid one.
