Journalist feels Tottenham star might have played his last game for the club

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has recently picked up an injury that has sidelined him for 6 to 8 weeks.

According to the Athletic’s James Maw, the 36-year-old might have played his last game for the London club following his recent injury blow.

Lloris is no longer the keeper he used to be and he has been criticised heavily because of his error-prone performances this season.

There have been rumours that Tottenham could look to replace him as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and Maw believes that the Frenchman might not get to start for Tottenham again.

Maw said to The View From The Lane Podcast: “When this first broke, that was my first thought [has Lloris played his last game], that it’s not inconceivable that that is the case.

“It’s such a shame that this has come at this moment because it kind of felt like Spurs had got over the hump of a very difficult winter.

“They get two new players in, three wins on the bounce, three clean sheets and it comes suddenly feels like there’s real momentum again and we’re looking ahead to the rest of the season with such optimism.

“And then your captain, your most experienced player, a World Cup winner is out of the team, for let’s say at least half of the rest of the season, probably it’s a bit of a nightmare isn’t it?”.

The 36-year-old has been a loyal servant for the London club ever since his move from Lyon but he is clearly past his peak and Tottenham will have to bring in someone better if they want to challenge for the major trophies in the coming seasons.

Lloris could still be a useful squad player for the London club and Tottenham could use his leadership qualities and experience.

The former World Cup winner will be hoping to recover quickly and return to action in a couple of months.

Meanwhile, Fraser Forster is expected to deputize in his absence for now and it remains to be seen whether the former Southampton goalkeeper can impress with his performances and hold down a regular starting berth until the end of the season.

Hugo Lloris has a contract with Tottenham until the summer of 2024 and it is highly unlikely that the London club will renew his contract in the coming months.

They have been linked with a move for the Brentford goalkeeper David Raya in recent weeks and the Spaniard could be a quality replacement for Lloris in the long run.
