Journalist claims 22-year-old wants to leave Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence has been linked with a move away from the club this month.

According to Talksport journalist Alex Crook, the 22-year-old wants to leave the club and it remains to be seen whether Spurs are prepared to sanction his departure.

The talented young right-back joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough at the start of the season but he has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot under Antonio Conte. Spence needs to leave the club in order to play regular first-team football and continue his development.

Crook believes that the player could leave the club towards the end of the window and it will be interesting to see if any club is willing to provide him with an exit route.

Crook told GiveMeSport: “Character references are quite a big thing in football and I’m not sure that his is particularly glowing.

“It’s pretty damning when Tottenham have struggled down the right hand side of their defence that he still doesn’t get a look-in.

“I think he probably will go and he definitely wants to go. It might be a case of which club is most desperate towards the end of the window.”

The 22-year-old was on loan at Nottingham Forest last season and he helped them secure promotion to the Premier League. He was a key player for them in the Championship and Spence was expected to make an immediate impact in the Premier League as well.

However, he has simply failed to win the trust of his manager so far. Despite the underwhelming performances from Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, Conte has chosen to stick with them instead of giving the youngster regular opportunities.

Ideally, the 22-year-old should look to leave the club on loan until the end of the season. Regular game time during the second half of the campaign could help him improve as a player and boost his confidence. He could return as a better player next season and look to force his way into Conte’s first-team plans.
