Former Tottenham man believes James Maddison’s future at the club could be over if Spurs sign £60m star

Tottenham signed James Maddison in a high profile signing last summer.

The England international started strongly in North London, scoring three goals and providing five assists in his first nine appearances.

However, after recovering from an ankle injury, he struggled to maintain that momentum.
This inconsistency has likely prompted the Lilywhites’ hierarchy to reconsider Maddison’s future at the club.

According to Spurs’ scout Bryan King, the club might replace Maddison with another English midfielder, Eberechi Eze, in the upcoming transfer window.

Spurs have shown interest in Crystal Palace’s star player, and a potential summer move is on the horizon.

Although Eze extended his contract last November, keeping him at Selhurst Park until 2027, he could still be on the move.

Tottenham are reportedly prepared to trigger the £60 million release clause for the attacking midfielder.

Eze had an impressive campaign last season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in 27 Premier League appearances.

His talent is further highlighted by his selection for England’s 26-man squad for the ongoing Euros, a feat Maddison did not achieve.

In an interview with Tottenham News, Bryan King expressed scepticism about the club spending a significant sum on Eze if Maddison remains.

King acknowledged Eze’s talent and excitement as a player but noted his similarity to Maddison, raising questions about Maddison’s future at Spurs.

This is especially pertinent given Maddison’s decline in performance and attitude in the latter half of the season.

King said:

“Eze would be an exciting signing, he is a very good player.

“But he reminds me a lot of Maddison. Does this therefore suggest that Maddison’s time with Tottenham could be up?

“Maddison started off very brightly but then he disappointed himself and the club in the second half of the season.

“His attitude went downhill and he seemed to get involved in things on and off the field which were unnecessary.”

As Tottenham approaches the transfer window, the potential acquisition of Eze could signal a significant shift in their midfield strategy.
