James Maddison opens up about Neal Maupay incident and why he was so “annoyed”

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison recently shared his thoughts on Neal Maupay’s antics, after the Everton forward mocked his signature dart-throwing celebration last season.

The incident took place last season when Maupay, then at Brentford, scored against Spurs and imitated Maddison’s iconic celebration, later amplifying the moment by posting about it on social media.

However, Maddison has brushed off the situation, making it clear that Maupay’s actions didn’t bother him.

The England international revealed that his annoyance was more about Tottenham conceding a goal during the match, rather than the celebration itself. He also mentioned that if Maupay continues to reference the celebration, that’s his decision, but for Maddison, the incident is now in the past.

During an interview with Optus Sport, the 27-year-old remarked:

“I have no feeling towards that to be honest. I was more annoyed about the fact we conceded on the night. If he’s trying to milk it a bit more now that’s up to him. It’s a distant memory in my mind, I’ll be honest with you.”

Interestingly, Maupay’s jibes didn’t stop there. When Maddison was left out of England’s 26-man squad for the Euros earlier this summer, Maupay posted a picture of himself with darts on his social media, seemingly referencing their earlier exchange. Despite this, the attacking midfielder remained composed, choosing to focus on his performances on the pitch.

Maddison ultimately had the last laugh in that match, as after Brennan Johnson scored for Spurs in the second half, the two celebrated together in a playful nod back at Maupay’s earlier antics.
