Ivan Toney impressed by defender linked with a move to Tottenham

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur are actively targeting defenders ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

While signing a centre-back might not be Spurs’ top priority, the club is considering further solidifying its defence for the next season.

Among the names linked with a move is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

The 23-year-old defender has recently been selected for England’s final 26-man squad for the upcoming Euros.

Guehi is known for his no-nonsense defending and physical dominance. His England teammate Ivan Toney, who is also on Tottenham’s radar, has praised Guehi as one of the toughest defenders he has faced.

Originally from Cote d’Ivoire, Guehi has become a key player for Crystal Palace, even captaining the team in several games last season.

Despite suffering a knee injury that sidelined him for nearly three months and caused him to miss 13 games, Guehi made 25 Premier League appearances, starting 23 of those games.

Guehi also played in both of England’s recent friendly games before the Euros against Bosnia and Iceland and is expected to play a significant role for Gareth Southgate in the tournament.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ivan Toney highlighted Guehi’s defensive prowess, noting his surprising strength despite his smaller stature.

Toney mentioned that Guehi is one of the toughest opponents he has faced, often preferring to position himself against the other centre-back instead.

He said:

“The centre-backs are the players I came up against. I don’t think I played him this season but before Marc Guehi.

“He is so strong for a small guy. I think he is up there with one of the strongest. He would be up there with a tough opponent, sometimes I just drift to the other side where the other centre-back is when he’s playing!”

With over two years remaining on Guehi’s contract at Palace, securing the Eagles’ dependable defender will not be easy for Tottenham.
