“It’s smart business” Spurs told they should sign this player on a free transfer

Alex McLeish reckons it would be smart business for Tottenham to sign Sam Johnstone from West Brom on a free transfer in the summer.

The England goalkeeper has been linked with a move to a Premier League club since West Brom got relegated to the English second division.

Football Insider reported earlier that Tottenham is monitoring his situation at West Brom with a view to landing him on a free transfer at the end of this season.

Former Scotland manager, McLeish, believes it would be smart for them to sign him on a free transfer, especially because they will hardly want to spend £40-50million on a new goalkeeper.

He concedes that the Baggies number one isn’t on the same level as Tottenham captain, Hugo Lloris, but he believes with time, the Englishman can replace the World Cup winner in the Tottenham goal.

“It’s smart business if they can get him on a free,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“If he’s at a level where it can definitely get higher then it’s great business.

“He’s not going to come and usurp Lloris right away, is he? If he’s one they can work with and they can groom him to be the next Spurs number one, then it’s good business.

“Business is business. Notably, you don’t hear them linked with a £40-50million goalkeeper, do we? That’ll be down to the recruitment team.

“If they’re doing a good job, then it has to be done.”

Tottenham signed Pierluigi Gollini on loan from Atalanta in the last transfer window and the Italian is also hoping to replace Lloris at the club in the long term.
